A major update has emerged on the future of two WWE championships that seemed to be in line to potentially be scrapped.
Last year, WWE debuted WWE Speed – a Twitter exclusive show that featured one match per week with a five-minute time limit.
In recent weeks, there has been no sign of WWE Speed, and it’s been reported that the show is no longer taking place as WWE’s deal with Twitter has come to an end.
This meant the state of the men’s and women’s Speed Championships seemed up in the air.
At present, the titles are held by El Grande Americano and Sol Ruca.
During WWE NXT Heatwave tonight, NXT General Manager Ava made an announcement regarding the future of the Speed Championships.
Ava announced that both the men’s and women’s Speed Titles are now officially part of NXT, and will be defended on NXT programming rather than the aforementioned Twitter exclusive show.
While nothing specific about the men’s title was mentioned, there was a further announcement regarding the future of the women’s championship.
Ava announced that Sol Ruca will defend the title at No Mercy against the winner of a four-woman tournament, which will feature one woman from the WWE main roster, one woman from NXT, one woman from TNA, and one woman from AAA.
The winner of that tournament will challenge Ruca for the Speed Women’s Title at No Mercy.
So in summary, it appears WWE Speed as a show is scrapped, but the championships are staying around in NXT.
