MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The La Salle men’s soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to #16 nationally ranked West Virginia Monday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers struck first in the ninth minute when Marcus Caldeira scored off a free kick to give the hosts an early 1-0 advantage. Thijs Veldhorst doubled the lead just before halftime, finishing in the 42nd minute off a setup from Ethan Dekel Daks.
West Virginia continued to apply pressure in the second half, extending its lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute on a goal from Bryce Swinehart. Caldeira capped the scoring with his second goal of the night in the 86th minute.
The contest was physical throughout, featuring 16 fouls and eight cards, including a first-half red card to La Salle’s Ismael Deme in the 37th minute.
West Virginia outshot La Salle 26-4 and held a 10-2 edge in shots on target. Explorer goalkeeper Tino Kneis turned away 10 shots in a strong effort between the posts, the most saves he’s had in a game since October 2022.
