Netflix’s latest phenomenon, “KPop Demon Hunters,” hit theaters this weekend after dominating the streamer’s charts for almost two months.
The movie, which was released on June 20, is now Netflix’s most-watched animated film in history, and its second-biggest film ever, per Newsweek. “KPop Demon Hunters” was produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, which made the “Spider-Verse” movies.
The movie is currently the No. 1 film on Netflix and has remained in its top global film ranking for nine weeks.
According to Deadline, two reasons for the film’s success are its popularity among kids and its hit songs. The movie’s soundtrack was No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart last week, with over 3 million global streams to date.
The soundtrack also topped charts on Spotify — the song “Your Idol,” from the movie’s fictional boy band, surpassed real K-pop group BTS’ “Dynamite.”
“KPop Demon Hunters” follows three young-adult pop stars, Rumi, Mira and Zoey, in a group called Huntr/x, who also moonlight as demon hunters when they aren’t performing and releasing hit songs. When a group of demons poses as a rival K-pop boy band aimed at stealing their fans’ souls, the girls have to fight to hold the demons at bay and keep their friendship strong.
Over the weekend, the “sing-along” version of the film was released into 1,700 theaters across the country for just two days, per Deadline.
How did ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ do at the box office?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the animated movie grossed a chart-topping $18 million to $20 million during the two-day release. These numbers are all according to estimations, since Netflix does not report box-office numbers, so the exact number is unknown.
“KPop Demon Hunters” landed ahead of “Weapons,” “Freakier Friday” and “Fantastic Four” in the box office, according to Forbes.
But, because Netflix doesn’t release box office numbers, “Weapons” has been listed as the official box-office winner of the weekend, with $15.4 million from 3,631 theaters, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The top cities for screenings of “KPop Demon Hunters” in theaters were Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Dallas. The two theater chains with the highest shares of attendance and the highest box-office numbers from the movie were Regal and Cinemark, per Deadline.
Sing-along version of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ added to Netflix
After the sing-along version’s brief stint in theaters, Netflix announced on Sunday that it would be released on the streaming service Monday at midnight PDT, per Deadline.
The announcement was made on social media with the caption “FOR THE FANS.” The addition was then confirmed on social media on Monday.
Will there be a ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel?
According to Entertainment Weekly and Newsweek, the film’s two directors, Chris Appelhans and Maggie Kang, have both hinted at the film receiving a sequel.
It is also possible that “KPop Demon Hunters” could become a whole franchise with multiple sequels, per Forbes.
When talking about the creation of the movie and possible sequels, Kang shared with Entertainment Weekly that creating more movies will allow them to explore the backstories of the main characters more.
