KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The No. 24 Missouri State men’s soccer team fell to the No. 18  Kansas City Roos on the road with a 2-1 scoreline on Monday evening. An early goal by senior Ollie Bate wasn’t enough to get the Bears over the line against an inspired Roos team.

The Bears (1-1) faced early aggression by the Roos (1-0-1), who came out of the blocks strong, putting pressure on the Bears’ defense. But in the eighth minute, MSU created an opening and Ollie Bate found the net, scoring in the bottom-right corner, assisted by American Conference Offensive Player of the Week Fumiya Shiraishi

The Roos didn’t let this deter them from their aggressive play, however, and in the 11th minute, Jeremy Francou scored to equalize. Then shortly after, in the 15th minute, Bryson Gosch once again found the back of the net for Kansas City to go up, 2-1.

Missouri State amped up its offense and pressed with seven shots to Kansas City’s five before the intermission, with both teams shooting two shots on goal in the first half. However, the Roos still went into the break retaining their 2-1 lead.

While the Bears continued to fight all throughout the second half, the Roos proved too strong on defense, denying MSU’s ample second-half shots.

Statistically, MSU outshot the Roos, 15-5. The Bears also led with shots on goal, 5-2. Kansas City was led by a superb goalkeeping performance by Marc Popow, who made four close saves. The Roos also applied pressure with physicality, committing 15 fouls to MSU’s nine. Kansas City also booked two yellow cards.

The No. 24 Missouri State Bears’ will host Tampa at home at Betty & Bobby Allison South Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 28, at 7:00 p.m. Admission to all home games is free all season.
