Display

The RedMagic Astra features a gogeous 9.06-inch LTPO OLED. It supports 10-bit color depth, 165Hz refresh rate, 5280Hz PWM dimming, and HDR10 video. The resolution is 2,400 x 1,504 pixels, which works out to a pixel density of 313ppi.

RedMagic Astra review

According to the official specs, it can offer 1,000 nits of typical max brightness and up to 1,600 nits of peak brightness.

We can confirm that the screen indeed offers north of 1,000 nits of max brightness in its Auto mode when the ambient light is bright enough. The maximum brightness with manual control of the slider is 682 nits, which is fine for a tablet.

The minimum brightness we measured with our white pattern on screen was 2.7 nits.

The screen supports up to 165Hz refresh rate. The available refresh rate modes include Auto, 60Hz, and 165Hz.

The Auto mode uses 120Hz for when displaying Android OS and various non-gaming apps and switches to 165Hz for games and benchmarks. It reverts to 60Hz for static images.

The 165Hz mode is the same as Auto but it allows the UI and compatible non-gaming apps (not that many) to work at 165Hz instead of 120Hz. And the 60Hz mode is self-explanatory.

Unfortunately, YouTube is the only app to show HDR10 streaming as an option, but the HDR effect is not that good.

Battery life

The RedMagic Astra is powered by a 8,200mAh battery, a decent capacity for a 9-inch device.

The tablet achieved 11:12h Active Use Score on our battery life test. It clocked close to 60h of Wi-Fi calls via WhatsApp, over 8h of web browsing and over 8h of gaming, and it can last almost 11 and a half hours on video streaming.

While the web score is somewhat lower than expected, the streaming and gaming are quite alright given the battery capacity and powerful hardware.

Charging speed

The RedMagic Astra supports up to 80W fast charging. The tablet ships without a charger, but you can use any compatible USB-PD charger on the market; however, as you will see in our test below, not all chargers charge the tablet at the same speed.

You can turn on/off turbo charging, and you can also enable/disable bypass charging (called Charge separation). It powers on the tablet without charging the battery, so you avoid the heat buildup related to the charging process, which might compromise the device’s performance.

We used a RedMagic 80W PD charger and carried out the charging test with the Turbo Charging staying on. The charging speed was impressively fast. A full charge of the 8200 mAh battery took just 63 minutes, and half an hour of charging from empty gave us 69% charge.

The numbers were noticeably slower with the 120W PD+PPS charger we tried as well. We achieved 19% charge in 15 minutes, 41% in 30 minutes, and captured 100% charge at the 82-minute mark. It seems getting a RedMagic charger is the way to go if you want the fastest charging possible.

In addition to turbo and bypass settings, you can also enable an 80% charging cap limit if you keep the tablet always on a charger and you are concerned about the battery always sitting at 100%.

Speakers

The RedMagic Astra has two large speakers placed symmetrically across its shorter sides.

RedMagic Astra review

The stereo setup scored a Good mark on our loudness test. The audio quality is also good – the vocals are great, the high-frequencies are rich, though the bass is minimal, if any, and the sound is a bit flat.

Use the Playback controls to listen to the phone sample recordings (best use headphones). We measure the average loudness of the speakers in LUFS. A lower absolute value means a louder sound. A look at the frequency response chart will tell you how far off the ideal “0db” flat line is the reproduction of the bass, treble, and mid frequencies. You can add more phones to compare how they differ. The scores and ratings are not comparable with our older loudspeaker test. Learn more about how we test here.
