Unsigned Vancouver Canucks prospect and 2024 4th-round pick, Riley Patterson has officially requested a trade from the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).
The 19-year-old forward, whose natural position is centre, was drafted in the fourth round (125th overall) by the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks 14 months ago.
After the Vancouver Canucks missed the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoff’s by a wide margin, it was clear that the team needed to add some major fire power in their top-6, but it clearly has not gone to plan.
“Hearing the Canucks have cooled off on pursuing late summer UFA Jack Roslovic.
Club wants a full-time centre upgrade, and doesn’t see that player available in the UFA bargain bin. It’s going to take a trade.- Thomas Drance
Vancouver Canucks prospect Riley Patterson requests trade from the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
With the Canucks keeping their roster basically as is, the organization will have to rely on their core to get through the first weeks of the season, but, will also look to their prospect pool to fill those holes when they inevitably open up due to injury or lack of production.
One prospect in particular is making waves down in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for different reasons as he went to Barrie Colts General Manager Marty Williamson and officially requested to be traded.
Colts GM stated that the Canucks 2024 4th-round pick wants a fresh start, and there is no bad blood for wanting a change of scenery.
«He wants a fresh start,» said Colts GM Marty Williamson, confirming that Patterson will not attend training camp. «(No hard feelings), I still really like Riley.»
In his second season with the Colts in the OHL, the 19-year-old led the team with Kashawn Aitcheson in points, recording 24 goals and 35 assists for 59 points in 64 games, but is now apparently awaiting at home to be dealt.
After deciding to return to the OHL and forgoing his opportunity to attend Michigan State in the NCAA, Patterson remains unsigned by the Canucks and is looking to have a monster season as an over-ager in order to earn that desirable entry-level contract.
With the lack of open spots on the Colts’ top-6, he is looking for a team that will allow him to play loads of minutes in order to showcase he has was it takes to make it in the National Hockey League with the Canucks.
