\n\tJohn Williams<\/a> is one of the most prolific film composers of all time, having created some of the most iconic scores of the past 60 years, winning five Oscars and becoming the gold standard of movie musicians. Ironically, though, the 93-year-old maestro recently admitted to his indifference and criticism of film music as a genre, telling a biographer \u201cI never liked film music very much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn this Guardian interview<\/a> with author Tim Grieving about Grieving\u2019s upcoming biography of the composer, Williams broke down the craft that he\u2019s contributed so much to. \u201cFilm music, however good it can be \u2013 and it usually isn\u2019t, other than maybe an eight-minute stretch here and there,\u201d he said, \u201cI just think the music isn\u2019t there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, brushing off the appreciation for film music as the product of \u201cremembering it in some kind of nostalgic way,\u201d before adding, \u201cJust the idea that film music has the same place in the concert hall as the best music in the canon is a mistaken notion, I think.\u201d Furthermore, he criticized most film music as \u201cephemeral\u201d and \u201cfragmentary and, until somebody reconstructs it, it isn\u2019t anything that we can even consider as a concert piece.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWilliams\u2019 greatest works include the Academy-Award winning scores for \u201cFiddler On The Roof,\u201d \u201cJaws,\u201d \u201cStar Wars,\u201d and \u201cSchindler\u2019s List,\u201d and his unmistakable music in \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d \u201cIndiana Jones,\u201d \u201cSuperman,\u201d \u201cHarry Potter,\u201d \u201cHome Alone,\u201d \u201cSaving Private Ryan,\u201d \u201cClose Encounters of the Third Kind,\u201d \u201cEmpire of the Sun\u201d and more. His latest original score for a theatrical film was for \u201cIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny\u201d in 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\tPart of the reason that his scores are so remarkable is because they take influence from classical and romantic composers like Johannes Brahms and Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
