But considering the significantly heftier price tag on wild-caught, how much of a nutritional difference are we really talking about here?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If the difference is only negligible, is the more-affordable farmed salmon still a good choice?\u00a0Here\u2019s what registered dietitians and environmental sustainability experts have to say.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the difference in how they\u2019re raised?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It\u2019s important to understand that farmed salmon and wild salmon have some distinct differences. Wild salmon live in oceans, rivers and streams, and typically travel far distances and eat a diet of smaller fish and marine organisms. Farmed salmon is generally higher in fat than wild salmon, but it\u2019s also loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, protein, vitamins and minerals. Here\u2019s a breakdown of some of salmon\u2019s key nutritional benefits:<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"In a 3-ounce serving of farmed salmon, you\u2019ll get nearly 19 grams of protein. In fact, fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines are so good for heart health that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/fats\/fish-and-omega-3-fatty-acids\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:American Heart Association recommends;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">American Heart Association recommends<\/a> eating at least two three-ounce servings each week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOmega-3 fatty acids can help reduce inflammation in the body, support the immune system, and lower high blood pressure,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/salge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Joan Salge Blake;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Joan Salge Blake<\/a>, a registered dietitian and clinical professor of nutrition at Boston University. \u201cChronically high blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The exact amount of omega-3s in farmed salmon varies depending on the type, what it eats and how it\u2019s farmed, but<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/175168\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:farmed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">farmed<\/a> usually contains more than<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/171998\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:wild;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">wild<\/a>. \u201cThis is due to its higher total fat content, which includes more of the beneficial EPA and DHA omega-3s,\u201d said<a href=\"https:\/\/romynathan.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Romy Nathan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Romy Nathan<\/a>, a registered dietitian specializing in cardiometabolic health and diabetes. Numbers will vary depending on source, but according to USDA FoodData Central,a 3-ounce serving of farmed salmon contains about 10.5 grams of fat compared to about 7 grams of fat in a 3-ounce serving of wild salmon. Farmed salmon is typically slightly higher in saturated fat, as well, containing <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/175168\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2 grams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2 grams<\/a> of saturated fat per serving compared with <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/171998\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:1 gram;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">1 gram<\/a> of saturated fat per serving in wild salmon.<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Salmon is a great source of vitamin D \u2014 a nutrient that supports bone health, immune health and more. But all salmon isn\u2019t the same when it comes to vitamin D content. <\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6566758\/#sec5-nutrients-11-00982\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Research shows;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Research shows<\/a> that wild salmon tend to have more vitamin D than farmed salmon. And even among farmed salmon, the vitamin D content varies greatly from one variety to another, likely due to the food that the salmon eats. \u201cWild salmon can have substantially more vitamin D because they are feeding on krill and small fish,\u201d Nathan said. \u201cIn contrast, farm-raised salmon are dependent on the composition and fortification of the feed provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While wild salmon tends to be much richer in vitamin D than farmed salmon, the exact amount varies depending on where the fish comes from. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31036792\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:2019 study published in the journal \u201dNutrients;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">2019 study published in the journal \u201dNutrients<\/a>,\u201d wild salmon caught in the Baltic Sea contained about 18.5 micrograms (\u00b5g) of vitamin D per 100 grams of fish (that\u2019s roughly a 3.5-ounce serving). Meanwhile, wild salmon from the North Sea had about half that \u2014 9.4 \u00b5g per 100 grams. By comparison, farmed salmon contained anywhere from about 3 to 9.5 \u00b5g per 100 grams. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminD-HealthProfessional\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D<\/a> for adults under 70 is 15 mcg, or 600 IU.<\/p>\n<p>Protein<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Another reason to eat salmon is its protein content. Like wild salmon, farmed salmon is a high-quality protein source, which helps with immune functioning, muscle growth and repair, satiety and energy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a 3-ounce serving of farmed salmon, you\u2019ll get nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/175168\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:19 grams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">19 grams<\/a> of protein. This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S004484861400619X\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:slightly less;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">slightly less<\/a> than the nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/171998\/nutrients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:22 grams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">22 grams<\/a> you\u2019ll get in a serving of wild salmon, though the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1155\/2022\/9318889\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:amounts vary;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">amounts vary<\/a> depending on the specific type of salmon and where it\u2019s sourced.<\/p>\n<p>Are there contaminants and antibiotics in farmed salmon?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">You may have heard that farmed salmon contains high levels of potentially harmful contaminants like <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/facts\/pcbs.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:polychlorinated biphenyls;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">polychlorinated biphenyls<\/a> (PCBs), which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0013935116311811\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:can accumulate;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">can accumulate<\/a> in the bodies of fish, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pcbs\/learn-about-polychlorinated-biphenyls\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Environmental Protection Agency;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSince PCBs are stored in fat, the fattier farmed fish may carry more contaminants than the wild salmon, which are leaner and have been less exposed through the food they naturally consume,\u201d Nathan said. And Is It Even Really Chocolate?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Depending on where your farmed salmon is sourced and the practices of the fish farm, its feed may <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6133359\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:contain antibiotics;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">contain antibiotics<\/a>. These, along with pesticides, are sometimes used to prevent infections that can easily spread in crowded pens. But those same antibiotics can have a negative impact on the environment and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30094087\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:human health;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">human health<\/a>, including an increased risk of antibiotic resistance and gut health problems. They raise king salmon with incredibly high environmental and welfare standards, and you can taste the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Keeping an eye out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0308597X1830842X\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:certification labels;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">certification labels<\/a> from trusted third-party groups can be helpful if you\u2019re looking to be environmentally conscious as you shop.
