LOUIS, Mo. &#8212; A new season brings in a sense of optimism for what the year will hold. This is no different for the Washington University in St. Louis men&#8217;s soccer team as they begin their second year under head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/coaches\/andrew-bordelon\/680\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"680\" target=\"_blank\">Andrew Bordelon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears will look to improve on their 8-5-3 record overall and 2-3-2 in their UAA contests from last season. WashU ended on a high note with a 2-1 on the road against Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>For the second year in a row, the Bears will start things off against Millikin on Friday, August 29 on the road at 4 p.m. They wrap up opening weekend on Sunday, Aug. 31 at Westminster at 5 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>WashU will open its home schedule on Friday, Sept. 5 when Elmhurst comes to Francis Olympic Field for a 5:30 p.m. contest. The game will also be the team&#8217;s International Student contest. The Bears will wrap up the weekend by hitting the road and heading to Illinois College on Sunday, Sept. 7 to visit the Big Blue at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The following weekend WashU will have just one contest, as they will make the trip south to Memphis for a road matchup with Rhodes on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears then return home for a pair of games at Francis Olympic Field beginning with a visit from North Park on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. The following Saturday, Sept. 20, WashU will host Wheaton at 1 p.m. Prior to kickoff, the Bears will honor their five seniors, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/nathan-szpak\/7985\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7985\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Szpak<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/ethan-semelsberger\/7983\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7983\" target=\"_blank\">Ethan Semelsberger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/zach-susee\/7984\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7984\" target=\"_blank\">Zach Susee<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/tyler-allred\/7969\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7969\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Allred<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/owen-deming\/7973\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7973\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Deming<\/a> with a special recognition for their years of dedication to the program.<\/p>\n<p>The next week, WashU returns to the road, but does not travel far as they pay a visit to Principia on Tuesday, Sept. 23 with a 5:30 p.m. contest. On Saturday, Sept. 27 the Bears will travel to cross-city opponent Webster for a 6 p.m. contest at WWT Soccer Park.<\/p>\n<p>One final non-conference matchup for WashU will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 30 when they host Greenville in a return contest from a season ago at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>UAA conference action gets underway on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Bears host Brandeis as part of Youth and Campers Day at Francis Olympic Field. Kick off is scheduled for 11 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>A road contest at Case Western Reserve awaits on Saturday, Oct. 11 when the Bears travel to Cleveland for a 10 a.m. ET contest. With no midweek contests remaining, WashU will take on Carnegie Mellon on Sunday, Oct. 19 when the Tartans pay a visit to St. Louis for an 11 a.m. kickoff.<\/p>\n<p>The final away weekend of the season starts off on Friday, Oct. 24 when the Bears visit Rochester in a 5 p.m. ET contest before traveling down to Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 26 for a contest with the defending UAA champion Emory Eagles at 11 a.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p>WashU will host its annual The Hidden Opponent contest on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. when they take on NYU. The Bears wrap up the regular season against Chicago on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>All four players who earned All-UAA honors last season are back including junior <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/quentin-gomez\/7974\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7974\" target=\"_blank\">Quentin Gomez<\/a>, who was named UAA Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team. He was joined by Susee and Szpak and junior <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/carter-sasser\/7982\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7982\" target=\"_blank\">Carter Sasser<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Bears return 89% (32 of 36) of their goals scored as well as 72% of their assists from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the five seniors, this year&#8217;s squad features 10 juniors, with Gomez and Sasser being joined by <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/nik-avillo\/7970\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7970\" target=\"_blank\">Nik Avillo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/liam-oiknine\/7980\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7980\" target=\"_blank\">Liam Oiknine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/colin-link\/7978\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7978\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Link<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/james-whitehurst\/7988\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7988\" target=\"_blank\">James Whitehurst<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/owen-ross\/7981\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7981\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Ross<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/ethan-wirtschafter\/7989\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7989\" target=\"_blank\">Ethan Wirtschafter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/cal-l-hommedieu\/7976\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7976\" target=\"_blank\">Cal L&#8217;Hommedieu<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/washubears.com\/sports\/mens-soccer\/roster\/noah-cooney\/7972\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"7972\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Cooney<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ross and L&#8217;Hommedieu combined for 1125:00 minutes in goal for the Bears last season and had a combined 6-4-2 record and 29 combined saves. Wirtschafter was second on the team a year ago in both goals (6) and points (14).
