but what about our mental health?<\/p>\n<p>A new study of 17- to 25-year-olds has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/teenagers-sleep-test-scores-tired-bed-time-b2737587.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> linked better sleep quality<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fruit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fruit<\/a> and vegetable consumption and exercise with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/sleeping-hours-long-heart-health-b2807567.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better mental wellbeing<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The findings also suggest that boosting fruit and vegetable intake could potentially help mitigate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/how-much-sleep-need-health-benefits-b2795186.html#:~:text=Older%20adults%20may%20want%20to,healthy%20window%20to%20aim%20for.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">negative effects a poor night\u2019s sleep<\/a> has on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/mental-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mental health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSleeping a little better, eating a little healthier, or exercising even for 10 minutes longer than you normally do was associated with improvements to how you feel that day,\u201d said lead author Dr Jack Cooper.<\/p>\n<p>While it is well known that sleep plays an important role in helping bodies to function, study authors say research has neglected how it might affect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/wellbeing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wellbeing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1447306544.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The study of 17- to 25-year-olds linked better sleep quality, fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise with better mental wellbeing\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>The study of 17- to 25-year-olds linked better sleep quality, fruit and vegetable consumption and exercise with better mental wellbeing (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Otago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/new-zealand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a>, analysed the relationship between sleep quality, eating fruit and vegetables, and physical activity on psychological wellbeing in young adults. <\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the journal PLOS One, used data from three previous studies: a survey study of 1,032 adults in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/new-zealand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a>, the UK and US; a 13-day study of 818 New Zealand adults who were asked to keep a daily diary; and an eight-day diary study of 236 New Zealand adults who also wore Fitbits tracking physical activity.<\/p>\n<p>Better sleep quality was strongly associated with better mental wellbeing across all three studies, and eating fruit and vegetables came second. <\/p>\n<p>Physical activity was also linked to better wellbeing when researchers compared how an individual felt between days rather than when comparing a group of individuals.<\/p>\n<p>It also found that above-average intake of fruits and vegetables appeared to mitigate the effects of a poor night\u2019s sleep, and a good night\u2019s sleep appeared to protect against lower fruit and vegetable intake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/iStock-1511686062.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Boosting fruit and vegetable intake could potentially help mitigate the negative effects a poor night\u2019s sleep has on mental health\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/><\/p>\n<p>open image in gallery<\/p>\n<p>Boosting fruit and vegetable intake could potentially help mitigate the negative effects a poor night\u2019s sleep has on mental health (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Senior author Professor Tamlin Conner, of the University of Otago psychology department, said: \u201cUnderstanding what lifestyle factors support wellbeing can help young adults not just \u2018get by\u2019 but thrive during this critical life stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf these healthy habits, sleep quality stood out as the strongest and most consistent predictor of next-day wellbeing, but eating fruit and vegetables and being active also helped boost wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis age group faces unique pressures \u2013 such as leaving home, financial stress, educational pressures and social stressors \u2013 that can lower happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But getting plenty of sleep doesn\u2019t just benefit mental health but brain function generally, especially in teenagers. <\/p>\n<p>A separate study of 3,000 young people by researchers at University of Cambridge and Fudan University in China found that those who got an early night, slept longer and had the lowest sleeping heart rates would outperform others on reading, vocabulary, problem solving and other mental tests.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS explained how age does play a role in how much sleep a person needs.
