And I don\u2019t like liars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He explained that people do not \u201csee any measurable benefits\u201d until they have had \u201cseven to eleven portions of fruit and vegetables\u201d, adding: \u201cSomeone in the government has said that five a day is what you should be getting because they don\u2019t think we can handle the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The NHS says that \u201cevidence shows there are significant health benefits to getting at least five portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.\u201d It clarifies that this means five portions of fruit and vegetables in total and not five portions of each, with one portion weighing in at 80g.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The campaign is based on advice from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/world-health-organisation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:World Health Organisation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">World Health Organisation<\/a> (WHO), which recommends eating 400g of fruit and vegetables a day at a minimum in order to avoid the risk of serious health problems including heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Oliver is insistent that Brits can do better.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Oliver thinks Brits can do better than five a day (Getty Images)\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/9fa6c80b99d42219d1bbe66a45084e00.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oliver thinks Brits can do better than five a day (Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBritain can handle it,\u201d he said. \u201cAt first they might say, \u2018Seven to eleven?!\u2019 but after a month they will get over it. I\u2019ve got recipes in here [his new book Eat Yourself Healthy] that have 11 portions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBy the time you finish it you will be full, so you won\u2019t be complaining about going hungry on some bloody Jamie Oliver diet. But I think I can still control my old man\u2019s annoyance. The whole point of ideas is that you don\u2019t put them in a box. Take it, run with it, call it your own.
