35-year-old German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff<\/a> advanced to the third round of the US Open<\/a> by beating Dane Holger Rune<\/a>, the No 11 seed, in a five-set tussle in New York on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n

Struff won the high-quality contest 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in a second round clash.<\/p>\n

The German, who peaked at No 21 in the rankings in 2023 but is now ranked No 144, will face No 17 seed Frances Tiafoe<\/a> next.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The 35-year-old won against American Mackenzie McDonald (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-3) in his first round main draw match.<\/p>\n

In the previous round, Rune, ranked No 11, defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2)).<\/p>\n
