NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Novels by Angela Flournoy,<\/a>Kiran Desai<\/a> and Megha Majumdar and a memoir by Arundhati Roy<\/a> are among the finalists for the 12th annual Kirkus Prize, which comes with a $50,000 cash award for winners in fiction, nonfiction and young readers’ literature.<\/p>\n Kirkus, the long-running trade publication, announced six nominees in each of the three categories Wednesday.<\/p>\n Desai’s \u201cThe Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny,\u201d in which an Associated Press reporter is a featured character, is also on the shortlist for the Booker Prize. Flournoy’s \u201cThe Wilderness” is her first novel since she debuted with \u201cThe Turner House\u201d a decade ago, and Majumdar’s \u201cA Guardian and a Thief\u201d is her first book since her celebrated debut, \u201cA Burning,\u201d was published in 2020. <\/p>\n Allegra Goodman’s \u201cIsola,\u201d Lucas Schafer’s \u201cThe Slip\u201d and David Szalay’s “Flesh” are the other finalists.<\/p>\n Roy’s \u201cMother Mary Comes to Me\u201d is a nonfiction nominee, along with Nicholas Boggs’ biography of James Baldwin, \u201cBaldwin: A Love Story;” Imani Perry’s \u201cBlack in Blues;\u201d Scott Anderson’s \u201cKing of Kings;\u201d Sophie Elmhurst’s \u201cA Marriage at Sea;\u201d and Greg Gandin’s \u201cAmerica, America.\u201d<\/p>\n The young readers’ finalists are Brian Floca’s \u201cIsland Storm,\u201d Thao Lam’s \u201cEverybelly,\u201d Derrick Barnes’ \u201cThe Incredibly Human Henson Blayze,\u201d Triinu Laan’s \u201cJohn the Skeleton,\u201d Moa Backe Astot’s \u201cButterfly Heart\u201d and Candace Fleming’s \u201cDeath in the Jungle.\u201d<\/p>\n Winners will be announced Oct. 8.
