When Kurt Cobain died by suicide in 1994, she showed him a Time\u00a0article, telling him: \u201cDo you know this guy? This guy\u2019s like a hero of yours. He\u2019s bipolar, I\u2019m bipolar. You might be bipolar, one out of three bipolar people kill themselves. You might kill yourself. Good luck.\u201d This moment crystallized years of living with her repeated suicide threats, which eventually became reality when she took her own life in 2006. Luke describes how his initial mission was simply \u201ckeeping her alive,\u201d but after her death, he had to learn an entirely new survival skill: \u201cnow I have to take care of myself and I don\u2019t know how to find the way out.\u201d<\/p>\n Get The Rapture Tickets Here<\/a><\/p>\n The musician candidly discusses his belief that \u201cmost people believe that they\u2019re fundamentally unlovable\u201d and how he used various forms of what he calls \u201cpermission\u201d to survive \u2014 baseball, drinking, drugs, and ultimately music. He credits alcohol with saving his life during his darkest periods, explaining his philosophy for young people: \u201cjust don\u2019t die before you\u2019re 30\u201d because \u201cpeople don\u2019t really get their feelings fully until they\u2019re like 32, 33.\u201d His breakthrough came through understanding that healing often requires giving yourself \u201cpermission to not think about yourself,\u201d especially through music and performance where he could be \u201cangry on stage\u201d in ways that helped both himself and audiences.<\/p>\n Luke\u2019s journey from surviving to thriving involved learning to channel rage into transcendence \u2013 a process he describes as the spectrum \u201cfrom black flag to spiritual music.\u201d His work with The Rapture became about giving \u201cpermission for people to not think about themselves and to channel\u201d their emotions safely.
