{"id":104255,"date":"2025-08-29T00:22:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/104255\/"},"modified":"2025-08-29T00:22:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:22:09","slug":"zellers-returns-again-this-time-starting-in-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/104255\/","title":{"rendered":"Zellers returns \u2014 again \u2014 this time starting in Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new incarnation of Zellers is set to open in Edmonton&#8217;s Londonderry Mall, after the defunct Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company transferred the discount retailer&#8217;s brand trademarks to the owner of Fairweather and International Clothiers, according to federal registries.<\/p>\n<p>Per the operator\u00a0of the north Edmonton shopping centre, the\u00a0former Hudson&#8217;s Bay location will be opening as a Zellers with a soft launch on Friday, Aug. 29.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be about 60,000 square feet,&#8221; said landlord Henry Zavriyev in an interview with CBC News from Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;ll be the first Zellers opening in Canada.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zavriyev said\u00a0his understanding is the store will sell household goods, along with clothing for men, women and children.<\/p>\n<p>The Londonderry location shut down as a Hudson&#8217;s Bay in June 2025. Representatives for Zavriyev&#8217;s company, Leyad, pointed\u00a0out it was converted to a Zellers in less than two months.<\/p>\n<p>While Canadian Tire purchased the intellectual property and branding from the Hudson&#8217;s Bay Company as it goes through insolvency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alvarezandmarsal.com\/sites\/default\/files\/canada\/CV-25-00738613-00CL%20HBC%20CT%20AVO%20June%203%202025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including the slogan<\/a>, &#8220;Where the lowest price is the law,&#8221;\u00a0it explicitly did not purchase the name or logo for &#8220;Zellers&#8221; or associated names such as &#8220;Zeddy&#8217;s Cub Club.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A white Zellers location is under construction.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/new-zellers.jpeg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>This Zellers is set to open at Londonderry Mall in north Edmonton. (Katie Teeling\/CBC)New Zellers may be run by Fairweather owner<\/p>\n<p>While Zavriyev\u00a0did not disclose the owner and operator of the &#8220;new&#8221; Zellers location, CBC News has uncovered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/app\/scr\/opic-cipo\/mc-tm\/rd-dr\/action\/open\/20882908\/666151-project%2520horizon%2520-%2520ip%2520assignment%2520agreement%2520(zellers%2520apa)%2520%255Bexecuted%255D_redacted.pdf\/PDF;jsessionid=00013u5stukUFuLISy4Zis_sqDZ:-A20FDI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">federal trademark registries<\/a>\u00a0that confirm the Bay has transferred control of the Zellers logo and trademark to Les Ailes de la Mode, represented by president\u00a0Isaac Benitah.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Les Ailes de la Mode is a former department store that was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/fairweather-buying-les-ailes-de-la-mode-stores-1.567725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">purchased<\/a> by Fairweather, a company also associated with Benitah.
