{"id":10639,"date":"2025-07-20T14:14:07","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T14:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/10639\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T14:14:07","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T14:14:07","slug":"buried-ball-baffles-mcilroy-in-wild-ride-for-hometown-hero-at-british-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/10639\/","title":{"rendered":"Buried ball baffles McIlroy in wild ride for hometown hero at British Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) \u2014 Rory McIlroy picked up the ball from the thick rough, held it out in front of him and burst out laughing.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of the most baffling things to have happened to him on a golf course.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Maybe one of the most frustrating, too.<\/p>\n<p>McIlroy was on a third-round charge at the British Open on Saturday, making birdies and generating roars from the deep galleries that could be heard from a half-mile away in this corner of his native Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>What derailed him was almost a trick of the mind.<\/p>\n<p>With one swish of his wedge, McIlroy not only hit his designated ball out of the rough to the right of the fairway on the 11th hole but also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SkySportsGolf\/status\/1946603355649745359\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:dug out another ball;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">dug out another ball<\/a> that had been buried underneath the turf, unbeknownst to him.<\/p>\n<p>The second ball popped out of the ground and settled between his feet, much to McIlroy&#8217;s surprise. \u201cI have another golf ball,\u201d he said with a confused smile to those around him after picking it up.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the most weird, ridiculous thing I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d McIlroy said later.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, it was just part of a roller-coaster round of 5-under 66 that McIlroy described as \u201cincredible\u201d and an \u201cabsolute pleasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three birdies in the first four holes. That bizarre trick shot on No. 11 that led to his only bogey. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheOpen\/status\/1946609265155694641\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:A bounce-back eagle from 55 feet;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">A bounce-back eagle from 55 feet<\/a> on No. 12 \u2014 producing, in his words, \u201cone of the largest roars I\u2019ve ever heard on a golf course\u201d \u2014 and a birdie on No. 15 when his approach hit the flagstick and stopped dead, a foot from the pin.<\/p>\n<p>It was classic McIlroy.<\/p>\n<p>But likely not enough.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of a wild day on the links off the North Atlantic, McIlroy trimmed just one shot off his deficit to leader Scottie Scheffler. The gap was now six shots to a guy McIlroy labeled \u201cinevitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe only thing that I can hope for is I get off to the same start that I got off to today, get the crowd really going,\u201d said McIlroy, who was in a four-way tie for fourth place, \u201cand then hopefully he (Scheffler) might be able to hear that a couple groups back and maybe feel some pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At times, it felt like McIlroy \u2014 wearing Tiger Woods red \u2014 had the support of the whole of Northern Ireland on a gorgeous day when the locals came out in force to cheer on their favorite son. He got a throaty, rock-star reception at every tee, even pats on the back as he emerged from the trouble to the right of the fairway on No. 17.<\/p>\n<p>This was Rory-mania in full swing, the latest and most thrilling chapter of a homecoming three months in the making after winning the Masters to join the career Grand Slam club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s almost a celebration of what I\u2019ve been able to accomplish,\u201d McIlroy said. &#8220;I want to celebrate with them, too.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve just really tried to embrace everything this week. I\u2019m having an incredible time. I\u2019m really enjoying myself, and I feel like I\u2019ve given myself half a chance now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Six years ago, the British Open returned to Royal Portrush for the first time since 1951. McIlroy shot 79 on the first day and himself out of the championship, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/mcilroys-salvage-operation-falls-just-short-at-british-open-9b848d3e63844c60b9303b24577e74bd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:failing to even make the weekend;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">failing to even make the weekend<\/a> as he struggled to handle the expectation of a home crowd.<\/p>\n<p>This week, he&#8217;s welcomed the pressure.
