CTV News Edmonton<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\nThe new location will be housed in one floor of a former Hudson\u2019s Bay location — one of the many across Canada that closed their doors after the retail giant went out of business in June. Leyad says the revived Zellers is the country\u2019s first to occupy a now-former Bay store.<\/p>\n
The Hudson\u2019s Bay name and trademarks have since been sold to Canadian Tire, though the company says that the Zellers brand, as well as the ongoing revival, are not part of that deal. <\/p>\n
\u201cI think Canadians are pretty excited,\u201d said retail expert Bruce Winder in an interview with CTV News Channel Thursday. \u201cCanadians have seen this story before, though.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2023, when Zellers was still owned by Hudson\u2019s Bay, the retailer made a brief revival through a series of pop-up locations inside Bay stores, though that was not to last. This time, Winder notes that things may feel different than the store shoppers remember.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt only really includes fashion products, so women\u2019s, men\u2019s, children\u2019s fashion or clothing, and home goods,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of cherry-picked the higher-margin parts of the former Zellers, but we\u2019ll have to see what the pricing\u2019s like, what the product\u2019s like.\u201d<\/p>\n
To stay competitive in a new decade and a new market, Winder says Zellers needs to understand its customers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has to have a clear target market, whoever that is; whether it\u2019s the \u2018value\u2019 customer, or what have you,\u201d he told CTV News. \u201cIt has to have the right value in the marketplace; the right combination of quality and price.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the question on everyone\u2019s minds: Unfortunately, it\u2019s not yet clear whether the beloved Zellers restaurants will be part of the comeback.<\/p>\n
