\n\tWhat was once an open secret has become marketable identity \u2014 the family tree isn\u2019t just background anymore. Legacy, in today\u2019s Hollywood<\/a>, isn\u2019t just a perk. It\u2019s the pitch.<\/p>\n

\n\tFor much of the last century, the industry clung to the fiction that it ran on grit and luck \u2014 a waitress discovered at Schwab\u2019s, a Sicilian immigrant bluffing his way into a studio job, a down-on-his-luck actor who sold his dog before writing\u00a0Rocky. These weren\u2019t just origin stories. They were the dream. Hollywood didn\u2019t run on merit, but it sold the illusion that it did \u2014 and for a while, that was enough.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, family ties existed. The Fondas. The Barrymores. The Hustons. But back then, legacy was subtext \u2014 not the pitch. Nepotism<\/a> worked behind the scenes, masked by coded language: \u201cdiscovered at a party,\u201d \u201ccut their teeth on music videos,\u201d \u201ccaught the eye of a festival programmer.\u201d The game was rigged \u2014 but tastefully.<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, the mask is off.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhy the shift? First, volume. Netflix alone releases over 1,300 new titles a year. Add in the rest of the streaming universe, and it\u2019s a deluge. And audiences, overwhelmed and wary, latch onto what feels safe. Famous parents feel safe. They don\u2019t guarantee talent, but they signal it. Whether or not the performance lands, the casting already has.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd the dynasties don\u2019t stop with actors. The son of a cinematographer becomes a director. A producer\u2019s daughter becomes a studio exec. A junior agent\u2019s godbrother lands a development deal. The public may fixate on nepo babies<\/a>, but the real dynastic consolidation is happening off-camera \u2014 in writers\u2019 rooms, on panels, at pitch tables.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut it\u2019s not just about blood \u2014 it\u2019s about osmosis. Kids of crew members and execs grow up on set. They learn how the room works, how to talk to agents, what to wear to Cannes, how to pitch Netflix. Their education starts long before film school and comes with a better Rolodex. They don\u2019t just inherit access \u2014 they absorb fluency.<\/p>\n

\n\tAll of which reflects a larger cultural shift. Hollywood once sold reinvention: anyone could make it. The waitress, the stagehand, the outsider. Even if it was myth, it was an aspirational one. Today, that myth has lost its utility. What sells now is proximity. Familiarity. A sense of inevitability.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an age of too much content, inevitability is a comfort. Audiences don\u2019t want to vet 500 emerging talents \u2014 they want one they already know. The industry feels the same. Why take a chance on an unknown playwright when you can have Ben Platt<\/a> \u2014 son of uber-producer Marc Platt \u2014 write it, star in it, or both?<\/p>\n

\n\tThe dream was once that anyone could make it.
