Oscar Piastri was summoned to see the stewards as a pit lane drama and the challenge of a flying teammate marked his testing return to Formula 1 action at the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.<\/p>\n

Lando Norris set the pace during both practice sessions in Zandvoort as racing returned after the mid-year break.<\/p>\n

Norris, just nine points adrift of the Australian pacesetter and riding the momentum of having won three of the past four races<\/a>, topped the time sheets in both sessions as the F1 title race resumed after its four-week break.<\/p>\n

Piastri also had a visit to the stewards to contend with after a pit lane incident resulted in him being asked to go around Norris and then swerving back into the path of Mercedes driver George Russell, who had to take evasive action when the pair nearly made contact.<\/p>\n

After the hearing, McLaren was fined 5,000 euros ($8,950).<\/p>\n

“I think he pulled in too early, then pulled back out. A bit unfortunate,” Russell said. “It scared me a bit.”<\/p>\n

Norris, victor at Zandvoort last year, again started off looking more comfortable than his Australian title rival on the seaside circuit, finishing first (1 minute 10.278 seconds) while Piastri was second quickest, 0.292 seconds adrift, in the morning.<\/p>\n

Then he again edged Piastri in afternoon practice, clocking 1:09.890, with the Melbourne driver third fastest on 1:09.979 behind Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso (1:09.977).<\/p>\n

Both McLaren drivers seemed happy enough with their initial efforts following the break.<\/p>\n

“It was a pretty good day overall. Improved some things over the day and found some more confidence with more lap time,” Piastri said.<\/p>\n

“There’s a few things to tidy up and improve as there normally is after a Friday, but overall it’s been a positive first day back.<\/p>\n

“It’s been reasonably easy to get back into things. Overall, I felt like I got back into a rhythm pretty quickly and it’s just been chipping away through the day.”<\/p>\n

Lewis Hamilton had another trying day, spinning his Ferrari in both sessions, and Verstappen’s Red Bull got stuck when he rode out during start practice after the early session.<\/p>\n
