{"id":108755,"date":"2025-08-31T00:35:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T00:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/108755\/"},"modified":"2025-08-31T00:35:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T00:35:07","slug":"black-bear-cub-safely-apprehended-in-southwest-calgary-neighbourhood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/108755\/","title":{"rendered":"Black bear cub &#8216;safely apprehended&#8217; in southwest Calgary neighbourhood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A young black bear that was observed wandering through the southwest Calgary community of Signal Hill on Saturday has been captured, according to\u00a0the Calgary Police Service (CPS).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please be advised that the bear cub in the 2900 block of Signal Hill Dr SW has now been safely apprehended and is uninjured,&#8221; said CPS in a statement to Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Police responded to reports of a bear wandering in the 2900 block of Signal Hill Drive S.W. at 10:05 a.m., before working with Alberta Fish and Wildlife to contain the cub with the goal of relocating it.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly before that time, Calgary resident Kristine Strom filmed the bear in\u00a0the nearby Westhills shopping centre.<\/p>\n<p>WATCH | Black bear wanders through Westhills:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756600507_644_default.jpg\"  alt=\"\" class=\"thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"video-item-title\">Black bear cub spotted at Calgary shopping centre<\/p>\n<p>Kristine Strom filmed a young black bear in an unusual environment: the Westhills shopping centre in southwest Calgary. A few hours later, police said the bear was captured in the nearby neighbourhood of Signal Hill.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I saw something black run across the road, and at first I thought it was a loose dog,&#8221; Strom said. &#8220;So I turned around to go grab it, because you don&#8217;t want a dog getting hit by a car, and I pulled into the parking lot by Michaels, and actually saw that it was a black bear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Strom&#8217;s footage shows the bear walking in front of an Adidas store before moving through the parking lot in a hurry.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A black bear in a parking lot.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/bear-calgary.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.267454350161117\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Kristine Strom said the black bear cub appeared frightened as she filmed it making its way through the Westhills Towne Centre parking lot. (Kristine Strom)<\/p>\n<p>Strom said the bear, which she stayed a safe distance away from, didn&#8217;t act aggressively toward her or anybody else in the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A couple other people were kind of walking around in the parking lot, didn&#8217;t realize the bear was there,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;But then, like seven vehicles or something pulled in and everybody was trying to drive up close to it, and I think it was just terrified.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said it was her first time seeing a bear in the city.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up on a farm, so seeing wildlife isn&#8217;t anything new,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Just seeing a black bear in the middle of somewhere like Westhills, though, it was a bit concerning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bear not new to Calgary<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to CBC News, Alberta Fish and Wildlife said the bear, identified as a male,\u00a0is believed to be the same one that had been reported multiple times in the southwest Calgary community of Discovery Ridge over the last couple of weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were no indications that the bear was getting into any unnatural food sources, however it was frequenting the community,&#8221;\u00a0the department said.<\/p>\n<p>Fish and Wildlife said the bear was reported to have moved into the community of Sienna Hills on Friday evening, before it was captured in Signal Hill the following day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Out of caution, the bear is being relocated to rural Crown land,&#8221; Fish and Wildlife said.<\/p>\n<p>Southwest Calgary is city&#8217;s bear hotspot<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s far from the first time black bears have been seen in southwest Calgary, which is home to\u00a0natural areas like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/bear-griffith-park-calgary-closure-1.6627345\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-size:13px\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Griffith Woods<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/black-bear-euthanized-fish-creek-provincial-park-1.7382991\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-size:13px\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fish Creek Provincial Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calgary.ca\/waste\/residential\/be-bear-smart.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City of Calgary<\/a>\u00a0lists 11 communities known to be visited by bears,\u00a0all of which are in the city&#8217;s southwest quadrant.<\/p>\n<p>The city suggests that people in these areas manage waste properly, including by cleaning carts regularly to reduce odours, securely storing collection carts, and\u00a0setting out\u00a0carts no earlier than 5 a.m. and no later than 7 p.m. on collection day\u00a0in order to avoid bear encounters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A young black bear that was observed wandering through the southwest Calgary community of Signal Hill on Saturday&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":108756,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[43,44,41,39,42,40],"class_list":["post-108755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/108755","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=108755"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/108755\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/108756"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=108755"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=108755"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=108755"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
