Walruses and icebergs \u2013 Why Evolution Is True"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post occupies one day of our trip, again traveling around the big island of Spitsbergen, where\u2019s there is a lot to see.\u00a0 And it was one of those lovely days when we had activities both in the morning and the afternoon. Morning: a heap o\u2019 walruses; and afternoon: a flotilla of icebergs.<\/p>\n<p>First, a map of the Big Island of the archipelago showing our travels. Spots 1 and 2 mark where we were on this day: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Jonsfjorden\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Jonsfjorden<\/a> (where we Zodiac\u2019ed around a glacier the <a href=\"https:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/2025\/08\/23\/to-the-arctic-part-3-a-glacier-and-its-offspring\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous day<\/a>), and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poolepynten\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poolepynten, <\/a>Walrus Heaven, both about 78\u00ba N latitude:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screen-Shot-2025-08-30-at-6.04.31-AM.png?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screen-Shot-2025-08-30-at-6.04.31-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"664\"  \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screen-Shot-2025-08-30-at-6.04.41-AM.png?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569290\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screen-Shot-2025-08-30-at-6.04.41-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"502\" height=\"381\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I woke up that morning, this was the view outside my cabin window. The iceberg was a harbinger of a good day. Click on the photos to enlarge them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Window.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-569300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Window.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Arctic and Antarctic trips have a preplanned schedule, but it always changes depending on weather, wind, waves, and whether there are animals about.\u00a0 This day\u2019s schedule began with animals, as they excitedly announced on the intercom before breakfast that we\u2019d zodiac to a headland, for they\u2019d spotted a bunch of walruses (I estimate 30-50) hauled out on the beach.\u00a0 I\u2019d never seen a walrus in the wild, of course, so I was \u201cin a state\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0We took Zodiacs to the shore, and came first upon some seaweed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Seaweed.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Seaweed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"747\" height=\"560\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost every time we went ashore in Spitsbergen, we had to stay close to a guide with a gun. Why? Polar bears, of course, the world\u2019s largest land carnivore, usually hungry, and mean as hell.\u00a0 Here\u2019s our guide for the walrus viewing.\u00a0 It was a large-gauge rifle with hollow-point bullets, and all the guides knew how to use it. I think they are not allowed to first at polar bears until they\u2019re 15 meters away and charging (they don\u2019t carry cash). Nobody wants to shoot these magnificent animals and I didn\u2019t meet a guide who had, especially because they are classified as \u201cvulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Guide-with-gun-rotated.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Guide-with-gun.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"699\" height=\"932\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked silently and in single file, having been told not to make any noise as walruses have sensitive hearing and are easily disturbed. Voil\u00e0: a haul-out with the ship in the background:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Walrush-and-ship.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Walrush-and-ship.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"757\" height=\"568\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walrus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlantic walruses<\/a> (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) at Poolepynten.\u00a0 There is only one species but two subspecies. From <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walrus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0walrus\u00a0(Odobenus rosmarus) is a large\u00a0pinniped\u00a0marine mammal\u00a0with discontinuous distribution about the\u00a0North Pole\u00a0in the\u00a0Arctic Ocean\u00a0and\u00a0subarctic\u00a0seas of the\u00a0Northern Hemisphere. It is the only extant\u00a0speci<a title=\"Species\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Species\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">es<\/a>\u00a0in the family\u00a0<a title=\"Odobenidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odobenidae\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Odobenidae<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0genus\u00a0Odobenus. This species is subdivided into two\u00a0subspecies:\u00a0the Atlantic walrus (O. r. rosmarus), which lives in the\u00a0Atlantic Ocean, and the Pacific walrus (O. r. divergens), which lives in the\u00a0Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Adult walrus are characterised by prominent\u00a0tusks\u00a0and\u00a0whiskers, and considerable bulk: adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds) and, among pinnipeds, are exceeded in size only by the two species of\u00a0<a title=\"Elephant seal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elephant_seal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elephant seals<\/a>.\u00a0 Walrus live mostly in shallow waters above the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Continental shelves\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_shelves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continental shelves<\/a>, spending significant amounts of their lives on the\u00a0sea ice\u00a0looking for\u00a0benthic\u00a0bivalve\u00a0molluscs. Walruses are relatively long-lived, social animals, and are considered to be a \u201ckeystone species\u201d in the Arctic marine regions.<\/p>\n<p>They weigh as much as a car.\u00a0 My camera beeped when it took a shot, but a guide showed me how to turn off the sound, as even a faint \u201cbeep\u201d might disturb these beasts. Above all, the guides and naturalists are concerned about the animals and the environment, which is great.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/whyevolutionistrue.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Walrus-3.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-569314\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Walrus-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"773\" height=\"366\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apparently they were cooling off; they do not huddle to stay warm, as they\u2019re encased in blubber. You might think that would be boring, but it\u2019s fascinating. All the bergs are different, have different shapes and colors, and often have different patterns from tumbling around in the water. I could easily stay out for several hours, but i think we had an hour and a half. It wasn\u2019t that cold, either.
