For media inquiries, email communications@bcgeu.ca.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QsuhHVR5oJ\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/QsuhHVR5oJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BCGEU (@bcgeu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bcgeu\/status\/1961550212796932502?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">August 29, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Talks between the union and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/governments\/organizational-structure\/ministries-organizations\/central-government-agencies\/bc-public-service-agency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">provincial government\u2019s Public Service Agency<\/a> began Jan. 22 but reached an impasse (a standstill where neither side is willing to budge until outside pressure forces a change) on July 18.<\/p>\n<p>The previous contract expired on March 31.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s at stake<\/p>\n<p>BCGEU members deliver frontline services across the province, from wildfire response and corrections to child protection and liquor and cannabis distribution.<\/p>\n<p>A strike could disrupt courts, slow social services, and strain wildfire response.<\/p>\n<p>Liquor and cannabis stores and warehouses may also face closures or supply issues.<\/p>\n<p>Essential services would continue, but the union has not yet detailed the scope of job action.<\/p>\n<p>The BCGEU said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcgeu.ca\/92_7_of_public_service_workers_vote_in_favour_of_strike_for_fair_contract_union_issues_72-hour_strike_notice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">release<\/a> that workers are facing an affordability crisis that has led to retention and recruitment problems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/bcgeu-strike-2025\/surreybccanada-march152021bcliquor-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2185549 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2185549\" class=\"wp-image-2185549 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/shutterstock_1937348230-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"BCGEU strike\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-2185549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Liquor supply could be affected if BCGEU members at distribution warehouses and retail stores walk off the job.(CDeWeger \/ Shutterstock)<\/p>\n<p>The union is calling for wage increases, fairer access to telework, a modernized classification system, and limits on the growth of excluded management positions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">MEDIA RELEASE: Public service workers to take strike vote following impasse<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkers are facing an affordability crisis and if wages don\u2019t keep up with the cost of living, we lose skilled workers \u2013 at a time when we need a strong public service the most,\u201d said Paul Finch, BCGEU\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1WSQhIDvZT\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/1WSQhIDvZT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BCGEU (@bcgeu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bcgeu\/status\/1946287480749318614?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">July 18, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Paul Finch, BCGEU president, said the government\u2019s current offer \u201cfalls far short\u201d of what\u2019s needed to stabilize the public service in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcgeu.ca\/92_7_of_public_service_workers_vote_in_favour_of_strike_for_fair_contract_union_issues_72-hour_strike_notice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> news release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcgeu.ca\/poll_british_columbians_back_public_service_workers_in_fight_for_fair_contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A Leger poll released<\/a> last week shows strong support for workers.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly three-quarters of British Columbians agree a pay raise is reasonable given inflation, and 60 per cent worry affordability issues are driving frontline workers away.<\/p>\n<p>Twice as many respondents said they would side with workers over government in a strike.<\/p>\n<p>The BCGEU is the first union in B.C.\u2019s public sector to reach an impasse with the province this bargaining round.<\/p>\n<p>With almost 600,000 people employed across the public sector, the outcome of this dispute could set the tone for other negotiations still to come.<\/p>\n<p>Daily Hive has also reached out to the B.C.
