Snoop Dogg<\/a> is addressing the backlash over his controversial comments<\/a> about LGBTQ+ characters in kids’ films.<\/p>\n

The rapper, 53, recently came under fire over remarks he made on the “It’s Giving” podcast<\/a>, where he said he was unhappy after taking his grandson to see the Pixar movie “Lightyear” because it featured a same-sex couple having a baby together. “These are kids,” he said on the Aug. 20 episode. “We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions! I don’t have the answer.”<\/p>\n

After sparking outcry and accusations of homophobia, Snoop Dogg responded to critics by commenting on a Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post<\/a> about the story. He wrote that he was “just caught off guard and had no answer for my” grandson, also claiming, “All my gay friends (know) what’s up they been calling me with love.”<\/p>\n

He continued, “My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old \ud83d\ude33 teach me how to learn I’m not perfect.”<\/p>\n

In the original podcast, Snoop Dogg said his grandson asked him how a woman can have a baby with another woman while they were watching “Lightyear,” and he was unsure how to answer. The “Toy Story” spinoff, released in 2022, featured an early scene where Buzz Lightyear’s commanding officer Alisha is revealed to have welcomed a child with her wife. The movie ignited conservative backlash at the time of its release due to a brief kiss between Alisha and her partner.<\/p>\n

On the podcast, Snoop Dogg slammed the film for “throwing me in the middle of” a situation where he didn’t “have an answer” for his grandson, and he said he is “scared to go to the movies now” because of the experience.<\/p>\n

The comments drew anger and mockery on social media, with one X post slamming<\/a> Snoop Dogg as the “biggest sellout in hip-hop” in reaction to the statements. “Wait, no, this is actual homophobia,” another X user said<\/a>, drawing over 350,000 likes. Earlier this year, Snoop Dogg also faced social media ire<\/a> after he performed at an event celebrating the inauguration of President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lauren Gunderson, a writer who worked on early versions of “Lightyear,” took to Threads<\/a> to defend the storyline after Snoop Dogg’s comments. Gunderson said that when a “key character needed a partner” in the film, it “was so natural to write ‘she’ instead of ‘he.'”<\/p>\n

“As small as that detail is in the film, I knew the representational effect it could have,” she said. “Small line, big deal. I was elated that they kept it. I’m proud of it. To infinity. Love is love.”<\/p>\n

In response to a Threads user who criticized Snoop Dogg, Gunderson also replied simply,<\/a> “He sucks.”<\/p>\n
