But behind the accolades lies a quieter struggle \u2014 the mental, psychological, and emotional toll on players.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"e3jEzksbVTM\">It cuts deep. Even the strongest minds can be pushed to the edge by the long hours, constant travel, and brutal financial swings of the game.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"e5mjr8vREHd\">A 2023 study in the UK by <a class=\"pros-embed-body__link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gambleaware.org\/media\/umbjkuxw\/gambleaware-secondary-analysis-final-report-june-2023-alma-economics.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">GambleAware<\/a> found that rates of depression and anxiety were significantly higher than in the general population: \u2018Professional gamblers have significantly higher rates of depression, fatigue, stress, loneliness, obsession, loss of self-worth, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts.\u2019<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eenv88-ByLc\">When players reach breaking point, many tend to withdraw into themselves. Mental health struggles, untreated and unrecognized, can fuel tilt, burnout, fractured relationships, and a loss of confidence, as the relentless pressures of a poker life hit hardest.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eEemU92QJM5\">Mental health may be one of the poker community\u2019s most pervasive yet silent crises. For too long it&#8217;s been dismissed, buried, and pushed into the shadows. It\u2019s time to bring the conversation into the open and let the light in.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018All my issues are mostly bottled up and hidden\u2019 \u2013 Rayan Chamas<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eHlFj3Hn68a\">Recently, a spotlight has fallen on mental health due to several courageous players slowly cracking open poker\u2019s culture of silence, speaking openly about how these internal battles have shaped their daily lives and affected their performance on the felt.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"edkQpyuwyp3\">One player who no longer chooses to stay quiet is professional Rayan Chamas, also known as \u2018Beriuzy.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eohM_sidml2\">In a brave and vulnerable post two years ago on <a class=\"pros-embed-body__link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/beriuzy\/status\/1696402279501283643\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a>, Chamas chose to open up about the mental strains and struggles of the game, in part due to a close poker friend taking his life.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gd-picture__img gpp-article-body__img lazyload gd-picture__img--responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/58e4cc1b6000-5373215271381a478a6d5o.webp.webp\" alt=\"Chamas will have to overcome Dongwoo Ko and his Final Boss chip lead to pick up his first WPT title. \"\/><\/p>\n<p>      Rayan Chamas is no longer silent about his struggles. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"e-pi9gqg8q6P\">\u201cAll my issues are mostly bottled up and hidden,\u201d said Chamas. \u201cI come across as happy on stream or in person all the time, it&#8217;s because I mostly am. However, that&#8217;s due to forced amnesia. I have been dealing with severe anxiety for a while now, and self-medicated with social drinking. Streaming kept me super distracted, and winning tournaments was another way to hide from the pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Chidwick steps forward<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eNl68caE9RsW\">Most poker professionals rarely, if ever, express the quiet part out loud. It\u2019s a sad truth: most players will never speak up.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"ekUqA6-ajdZt\">It\u2019s not hard to see why. Discussing one\u2019s own mental health publicly in the poker community is akin to walking a razor\u2019s edge of susceptibility; no matter which direction you step, cuts are unavoidable.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eERKYUCt4xxv\">The fear of vulnerability in such a competitive industry can cause players to retreat even further into silence, worried that opening up will be perceived as a leak or a weakness that can be exploited.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"quote-image lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.poker.org\/prod\/assets\/quote-icon.3ccb86b1ea67574ec9354c51a384ae1f.svg\" alt=\"quote\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    You\u2019re not broken. One of the game&#8217;s most successful players, Stephen Chidwick, recently made his first post on <a class=\"pros-embed-body__link\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ChidwickStephen\/status\/1947324570840515055\" target=\"_blank\">X<\/a>, detailing several mental health struggles he has encountered during his long and storied career.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eoPxf6E6cFm9\">\u201cIn 2019, I was voted by my peers in a CardPlayer magazine survey to be the best player in the world\u2026<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"ekl_fCaijAJN\">\u201cNow that I was painted as \u201cthe best\u201d, there was no margin for error. Despite everything I had accomplished, I was no less fragile. How much longer can I keep tricking people into thinking I\u2019m so good when I know how big my mistakes can be?\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"erneMpTIhVg1\">Chidwick further revealed some aspects of his journey toward healing to deal with the mental health issues that arose while competing at the highest levels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"enmjYCLgBjPZ\">\u201cThis message is for anyone who feels trapped in the darkness. I\u2019ve lived through times that felt unbearable \u2014 where the idea of peace, or connection, or even a quiet mind felt impossibly far away. If you\u2019re in that place right now, I want you to know: it can get better. You\u2019re not broken. You\u2019re not beyond help. The guilt and shame often pulled me into depression, and at my lowest moments, I wrestled with suicidal thoughts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eMANfgkYNs6V\">\u201cI later realized I wasn\u2019t only living with PTSD \u2014 I was also experiencing moral injury, a fracture in my sense of integrity. Alongside that came anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional volatility, all of which poker magnified through its swings, long hours, and isolating grind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eM3nBsUSDrKT\">\u201cBecause my situation was public, I\u2019ve been able to speak about it openly rather than bottling it up \u2014 but many players don\u2019t have that outlet. Too often, they fight their battles in silence, and isolation can be dangerous because we\u2019re not meant to heal alone; true recovery happens when we let others in.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"e6ICSRoerXEq\">\u201cThe game reflected the very pain I wanted to bury, but in doing so, it also gave me a lens through which to face it. This is primarily determined by a player\u2019s ability to cope with the constant uncertainties of a career in poker, as well as daily life. It\u2019s a balancing act best approached with acute self-awareness, as proper mental health isn\u2019t simply the absence of illness.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"e30vQqVd16rh\">At its core, good mental health bestows resilience \u2014 giving players the strength to realize their potential at the tables while still finding purpose, balance, and fulfillment beyond the game itself.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" id=\"eMj4AezpJRNN\">If success in poker involves optimization \u2014 of mindset, study, practice, and focus \u2014 then spending time on your mental and emotional well-being is essential to becoming the best player you can be.
