The reality test for light-based computing units

While large tech companies continue to cram their data centers with power-hungry silicon processors, an inconspicuous laboratory in Stuttgart is on the verge of a fundamental change. The chip developer Q.ANT is working on photonic processors – chips that calculate with light rather than electrons. What sounds like futuristic wishful thinking has long been based on concrete technology: instead of sending electrical impulses through transistors, these new processors modulate light waves to process data. The advantage is obvious: where no electrons flow, no heat is generated – and where light is involved, speed dominates.

Big promises are being made: 1000 times the speed, power consumption in the range of an LED. But does this vision stand up to the reality test? No – at least not in this form. The figures from the actual development at Q.ANT are much more sober, but still impressive: around 50 times the computing power of conventional AI processors with a 30-fold improvement in energy efficiency. These figures do not come from PR slides, but are based on actual pilot projects, with production taking place locally in Germany – at IMS Chips in Stuttgart to be precise.

Photonic chips could play a fundamental role in the field of artificial intelligence in particular. Neural networks require highly parallel matrix operations, for which traditional silicon architectures are becoming increasingly inefficient. Optical NPUs – neural processing units that work with light – promise significant leaps forward here. However, promises alone are not enough to build an infrastructure. Integrating this technology into existing systems poses a massive challenge. Server architectures are designed electrically. Photonic modules cannot simply be plugged in – they require new interfaces, new protocols and ultimately a rethink of the entire IT logistics.

Parallel to the work of Q.ANT, a research team at the University of California, Santa Barbara is also working on a complementary solution: photonic storage. The so-called magneto-optical memory uses yttrium iron garnet – a material that can switch 100 times faster than today’s flash memory, with only a tenth of the energy consumption and over two billion guaranteed write cycles. This would finally enable not only computing but also storage on a photonic basis – a decisive step towards completely light-based computer architectures. But despite all this progress, the market remains skeptical – and sluggish. The economic pressure to exhaust existing billion-euro investments in classic GPU data centers is preventing a rapid transformation. No one is going to convert their entire data center on spec just because a start-up in Baden-Württemberg is manufacturing glowing chips. There are also technical stumbling blocks: The production of photonic components is complex, the availability of materials is limited and compatibility with existing software infrastructure has so far been virtually non-existent.

The conclusion is therefore ambivalent. Yes, photonic computing is real. Yes, it works – more efficient, faster and physically superior. But the road to widespread industrial application is a rocky one. The revolution has begun, but it is rolling quietly – in the shadow of the big silicon cartels, away from the public hype. Anyone wanting to invest today should not be dazzled by PR figures, but should pay attention to technical substance and realistic roadmaps. Light will come – but only where people remain sober.

While large tech companies continue to cram their data centers with power-hungry silicon processors, an inconspicuous laboratory in…

[21
49,48,285,61
0":"post-111126","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-computing","8":"tag-ca","9":"tag-canada","10":"tag-computing","11":"tag-technology
["GET
