For those who grew up watching the cartoon or trading cards, it was a chance to live out their childhood dream of becoming trainers. Nearly a decade on, the game may no longer dominate headlines, but its fans haven\u2019t put their phones down. Across Bengaluru\u2019s parks and hotspots, a loyal community continues to thrive, bound by nostalgia, fitness, and a shared love of exploring the city.\u2018IT\u2019S A BLEND OF FUN AND FITNESS ACROSS GENERATIONS\u2019 Nostalgia isn\u2019t the only reason people play; exercise is a big one too. \u201cI\u2019ve met people who aren\u2019t millennials but much older, who took it up as a form of light physical activity. For them, it became part of their morning routine, stepping out for a walk while staying engaged along the way,\u201d says Arjun. For Yuktimmana, another community member, one of the biggest reasons to love the game was fitness.\u201cThe game turned something as routine as a walk into an engaging activity. It encourages movement and consistency, and that\u2019s what makes it such a useful fitness companion,\u201d she explains.\"Pokemon\u2018WE ARE CHASING NOSTALGIA, NOT JUST CREATURES\u2019For Anu, a community member, the journey started with nostalgia. \u201cLike many kids, I grew up with Pok\u00e9mon by collecting cards, battling friends, and watching the cartoons. It was a big part of my childhood. When I moved to Bengaluru, rediscovering this childhood connection felt like an easy way to explore this new city and spend time with her friends. What started as casual walks quickly turned into shared adventures with a larger community,\u201d she says. One of Yuktimmana\u2019s fondest memories from playing has been rediscovering her neighbourhood park. \u201cWhile playing the game, I even made a favourite spot for myself on the swing there. It reminded me of childhood in the simplest way, and it\u2019s something I wouldn\u2019t have done if not for the game,\u201d she shares.<\/p>\n

What began as casual walks soon turned into citywide adventures, with the hunt for rare finds making even familiar streets feel new<\/p>\n

\"Pokemon\u2018A GATHERING FOR SOMETHING ONE LOVES IS MIND-BLOWING\u2019Gopalan, one of the community leaders, recalls the early days vividly, \u201cFor me, those first weeks were all about the thrill of becoming a real-life trainer. A whispered tip about a Snorlax (a Pok\u00e9mon creature) would bring people running from different corners of the city. Over time, those random encounters grew into lasting friendships, and that\u2019s how our community really took shape.\u201d What started as a small and scattered group has grown into a network of over 3,000 members across Bengaluru. \u201cSeeing so many people gathered for something we love is mind-blowing, and it is a nostalgic chase. We even organise competitions that get very intense. But at the end of the day, no matter who wins, we all sit down over coffee or tea and chat endlessly about the raids. That bonding is what makes it so special,\u201d shares Gopalan.\"Pokemon\u2018THE GAME HELPS US FALL IN LOVE WITH THE CITY AGAIN\u2019Arjun, a community member, shares that he started travelling a lot because of the game. \u201cMany of my closest friends today are people I met through it. Sometimes, we plan meetups where we just walk around together, exploring new areas of the city that I had never visited before, often just to catch a rare Pok\u00e9mon or join a raid. It\u2019s always exciting, and that sense of discovery makes it even more fun,\u201d he says. \u201cI started frequenting the parks near my home much more often, and I even found peaceful bylanes and quiet spots I had never noticed before. It made me curious about my own city, and I noticed new places I might otherwise have ignored. The game has helped me fall in love with Bengaluru all over again,\u201d adds Yuktimmana.<\/p>\n

With its mix of green spaces and a tech-savvy population, Bengaluru is the perfect fit for the game; it gets people outdoors while also encouraging them to take in the city\u2019s beauty<\/p>\n
