What came first \u2013 the music or the misery? The perfect needle drop can help elevate a movie to perfection. It\u2019s not the only factor, but when a song hits at just the right moment \u2013 be it a character introduction, a moment of realization, a drug deal gone sour\u2026 \u2013 it can make it the scene. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter spun the hits<\/a> as they released a list of what they consider the 40 Best Needle Drops in Movies. So let\u2019s take a look, discuss and \u2013 as is custom with any professional list \u2013 rip it to shreds!<\/p>\n

THR made a smart choice in listing the movies alphabetically, therefore foregoing any additional favoritism or having to pick the definitive needle drop as #1. Another rule they implemented was that there could only be one song per filmmaker, although they lifted this for one director specifically \u2013 yes, it\u2019s Martin Scorsese.<\/a><\/p>\n

And this is where we can start the debate. For Scorsese, they went with \u201cLayla\u201d in Goodfellas and Devo\u2019s version of \u201c(I Can\u2019t Get No) Satisfaction\u201d in Casino. It\u2019s tough to dispute their Goodfellas choice as the movie\u2019s best needle drop, although there could be a case made for \u201cAnd Then He Kissed Me.\u201d As for Casino \u2013 well, I don\u2019t see it belonging anywhere near the list. Come on, there\u2019s \u201cJanie Jones\u201d in Bringing Out the Dead, \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Baby\u201d in Mean Streets and so many other great choices.<\/p>\n

Other directors who became synonymous with the needle drops in their movies include Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino \u2013 who get \u201cSister Christian\u201d from Boogie Nights and \u201cStuck in the Middle with You\u201d from Reservoir Dogs as their inclusions. Brilliant choices both but just for the sake of debate, I\u2019d go with \u201cGod Only Knows\u201d if I were to stick with Boogie Nights since it\u2019s a perfect cap to the family aspect of the film. Instead, the Beach Boys classic<\/a> was selected for Love Actually, which isn\u2019t a bad choice at all.<\/p>\n

Other stellar needle drop choices from movie history that could still be debated include \u201cThe End\u201d in Apocalypse Now (alternate choice: \u201cRide of the Valkyries\u201d), \u201cHotel California\u201d in The Big Lebowski (alternate choice: \u201cJust Dropped In\u2026\u201d) and \u201cThese Days\u201d in The Royal Tenenbaums (alternate choice: \u201cNeedle in the Hay\u201d). Inclusions on the list that are simply indisputable are \u201cIn Dreams\u201d from Blue Velvet, \u201cDreams\u201d from Chungking Express, \u201cFight the Power\u201d from Do the Right Thing, \u201cWhere Is My Mind\u201d from Fight Club, and \u201cThe Sound of Silence\u201d from The Graduate, the oldest film on the list.<\/p>\n
