{"id":113271,"date":"2025-09-02T03:11:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T03:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/113271\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T03:11:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T03:11:16","slug":"most-of-canadas-counter-tariffs-on-the-u-s-have-now-ended-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/113271\/","title":{"rendered":"Most of Canada\u2019s counter-tariffs on the U.S. have now ended &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most of Canada\u2019s retaliatory <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump-tariffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> against the United States came down on Monday, in keeping with Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/mark-carney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a>\u2019s announcement last month.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11345778\/mark-carney-donald-trump-tariffs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carney announced<\/a> that many of Canada\u2019s tariffs on its biggest trading partner, on goods that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico (CUSMA) trade agreement, will come down starting Sept. 1.<\/p>\n<p>He said this was after he and U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> agreed to \u201cintensify\u201d stalled trade talks.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Trump signed an executive order to levy broad-based, sweeping tariffs on Canada. The Canadian government responded immediately with then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announcing counter-tariffs against Washington.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFew other countries followed suit\u201d in imposing tariffs on the U.S., Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Canada\u2019s move was to \u201cmatch\u2019 U.S. tariffs, which remain in place and went up from 25 per cent to 35 per cent last month. The U.S. granted exemptions to Canada under CUSMA-compliant goods, but has placed tariffs on certain key Canadian sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s counter-tariffs on U.S. auto, steel and aluminum remain.<\/p>\n<p>Carney said Canada and the United States have \u201cre-established free trade for the vast majority of our goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Canada\u2019s average tariff rate with the U.S. is higher than it was this time last year, \u201cit is still better than that of any country,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we work to address outstanding trade issues with the United States, it\u2019s important \u2014 it\u2019s vital \u2014 we do everything we can to preserve this unique advantage for Canadian workers, Canadian businesses,\u201d Carney told reporters in Ottawa last month.<\/p>\n<p>Trump called the move \u201cnice\u201d while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office soon after Carney\u2019s announcement and said he would be speaking again with Carney \u201csoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working on something,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be very good to Canada. I like Carney a lot. I think he\u2019s a good, good person and we had a very good talk yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Business News: Canada drops some retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WEB_Business_News_August_24.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t3:49<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBusiness News: Canada drops some retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tWill groceries get cheaper?\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>With the removal of these tariffs, Canadians could see prices on some groceries come down relatively quickly, said University of Guelph food economist Mike Von Massow.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>One of the first products that Canadians could see get cheaper is Florida orange juice.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756402221_230_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose prices should come down relatively quickly because orange juice is a perishable product,\u201d von Massow said.<\/p>\n<p>Other products with longer shelf life, such as American pickles or sugar, will take a lot longer to get cheaper, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe put tariffs on U.S. sugar, so we should see the prices of those sugar products, like candy, that contain sugar that went up in price come down. Those will probably come down a little less quickly than orange juice, because it\u2019s not a perishable product,\u201d von Massow said.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s major grocers are expecting food prices to start decreasing in the coming days but warn that it may take longer than some want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the days ahead, the price of goods in all grocery stores impacted by tariffs will start to come down. It sends the wrong signal at the worst possible moment,\u201d Unifor president Lana Payne said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>United Steelworkers, a union representing Canada\u2019s metal workers, also criticized the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrime Minister Carney must meet the moment we are in,\u201d said USW national director Marty Warren.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal government must remain steadfast in working to not only safeguard and protect Canadian workers but aggressively build Canadian economic resiliency. Now is the time to be bold and develop a coherent industrial strategy for the Canadian economy and its workers,\u201d Warren said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Some business groups, however, are welcoming the move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy removing these tariffs, the Government of Canada is creating space for the U.S. and Canada to return to the table and focus on solutions that eliminate barriers to trade for our two countries,\u201d the Canadian American Business Council\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Business groups say this could lead to lower prices for some goods in the days and weeks ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s certainly welcome news.
