He earned an Oscar nomination for the supporting role of \u201cKicking Bird\u201d in the 1990 film \u201cDances With Wolves,\u201d an American western co-starring and directed by Kevin Costner that won best picture.<\/p>\n
Last year, he won a Canadian Screen Award for playing a version of himself in the comedy thriller \u201cSeeds,\u201d directed by Kaniehtiio Horn.<\/p>\n
Horn, who was born in Ottawa and raised on a Mohawk reserve, says she first encountered Greene\u2019s work when her family would rent the 1991 film \u201cClearcut\u201d from their local video store.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was playing this playful, badass character,\u201d Horn told The Canadian Press on Sunday night. \u201cHe was one of the first roles that I think we saw where we could actually cheer for the Indigenous character as he enacted some revenge.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was really cathartic to watch for a lot of Indigenous people, especially after the Oka Crisis in the early \u201990s,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That performance remained one to watch for Horn as she later became an actor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can tell he\u2019s having fun as an actor. That is just the best thing to watch, because he really made it his own,\u201d Horn said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Horn and Greene would end up working together on the Syfy series \u201cDefiance\u201d as well as the FX hit \u201cReservation Dogs.\u201d By the time she had cast him in her directorial debut \u201cSeeds\u201d they had built up what she described as a \u201cniece-uncle\u201d rapport. Horn said crews shot Greene\u2019s scenes over the course of one day and said she loved riffing back-and-forth on set together.<\/p>\n
\u201cGetting him to play and improvise\u2026it was a little bit surreal, but he made it easy for me. I feel like he just wanted me to do good, and he would tell me that. He would tell me that he\u2019s proud of me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Horn said Greene\u2019s death marks the loss of \u201cone of the old guard,\u201d likening him to other seasoned Indigenous actors such as Gary Farmer and Wes Studi.\u00a0<\/p>\n
She added Greene was an inspiration for not allowing himself to be pigeonholed into one type of role.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs much as they probably wanted to stereotype him \u2026 he never let that happen. And even then, the \u2018natives on the horse\u2019 roles that he got, he stood out and made those roles his own and just interesting to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was not only a good Indigenous actor, he was an good actor who happened to be Indigenous.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lou Diamond Phillips, Greene\u2019s co-star on the short-lived TV show \u201cWolf Lake,\u201d said he was \u201cterribly saddened\u201d to hear of Greene\u2019s passing on social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Greene was awarded the Governor General\u2019s award for lifetime artistic achievement in June, and received the Order of Canada in 2015.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was a great man of moral ethics (and) character and will be eternally missed,\u201d his agent Michael Greene said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Greene\u2019s credits also include the action classic \u201cDie Hard: With a Vengeance,\u201d the Tom Hanks-fronted drama \u201cThe Green Mile\u201d and the western comedy \u201cMaverick.\u201d<\/p>\n
On stage, he has appeared in \u201cOf Mice and Men\u201d and \u201cThe Merchant of Venice\u201d at Stratford Festival, as well as Tomson Highway\u2019s \u201cDry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasking.\u201d<\/p>\n
