He also wanted to take a 70-mile journey (about 113 kilometers) barefoot back to his childhood home in Canterbury.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4gxe600073b6n00ts3j74@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About 15 miles (24 kilometers) into his walk, he heard planes in the distance, and told CNN he believed \u201cthat somehow an evil force knew I had left.\u201d Cockburn knew with absolute certainty that he was being followed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4gxe700083b6nwwbt4s66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The solution, he believed, was to dive into the frigid tidal waters of the Newhaven Estuary and swim away from the malevolent presence. Fishermen found him and rescued him just before he blacked out from hypothermia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4gxe700093b6nolph6xmo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After being revived in a general hospital, he was transferred to a psychiatric hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with schizophrenia. The institution was the first of several where he would spend the next eight years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4gxe7000a3b6nv34mszr6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schizophrenia is simultaneously one of the most famous mental illnesses and one of the most misunderstood. Cockburn\u2019s case reflects a typical pattern of onset: in early adulthood, a psychological break into false beliefs, hallucinations and paranoia, all of which escalate over time.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/henry-cockburn-headshot-26932.jpg\" alt=\"Henry Cockburn is an artist specializing in painting, pastels, printmaking and drawing.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2996\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmesxssze00003b6nt7c6rlqg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI saw it as more of a spiritual awakening and not paranoid schizophrenia,\u201d Cockburn recalled. \u201cIt almost felt like I was on the run, and if you\u2019re part of the system and you take yourself out of the system, the system doesn\u2019t like that.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000g3b6n3jvr49t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI was kind of cross and angry, like, \u2018Why can\u2019t people understand me?\u2019\u201d Cockburn added. \u201cI can sort of see their point of view a bit more now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000h3b6nxtdgu9nf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Part of the confusion about schizophrenia may originate from the name of the disorder itself. Coined by Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Paul Eugen Bleuler in 1908, \u201cschizophrenia\u201d derives from the Greek words \u201cschizo,\u201d meaning \u201csplit,\u201d and \u201cphrene,\u201d or \u201cmind.\u201d To describe the severe social withdrawal of some patients with schizophrenia, Bleuler also <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Farticles%2FPMC3757918%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571633403%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=vWvd4%2BfTUPhlByN0FCoBtiI3OAr%2Fta%2FjPVRRKmotu48%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">devised the term \u201cautism<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000i3b6nmjpgkt42@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the early 20th century, Bleuler proposed that the disorder was marked by a \u201csplitting of psychological functions\u201d by which \u201cthe personality loses its unity.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000j3b6n8xg8ojaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The idea that schizophrenia means a split mind has contributed to a widespread belief in more formal contexts that the condition is like <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.clevelandclinic.org%2Fhealth%2Fdiseases%2F9792-dissociative-identity-disorder-multiple-personality-disorder&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571651706%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=lOduwMGjdvmJ3YeelW8YC2tPcUqY0Rk%2Fde39LwsikEc%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">dissociative identity disorder<\/a>, previously called split or multiple personality disorder, said Dr. Daniel Weinberger, director and CEO of the Lieber Institute for Brain Development. Dissociative identity disorder, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmy.clevelandclinic.org%2Fhealth%2Fdiseases%2F9792-dissociative-identity-disorder-multiple-personality-disorder&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571670477%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=%2BjtrkyrqeyIreg40OenJw7bFM75hodlCQkwHmWLIPzY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">caused by trauma<\/a>, is when two or more distinctive personalities control a person\u2019s behavior, causing gaps in memory when the personalities switch off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000k3b6nfqf8wqzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beyond those misperceptions about its underlying nature, schizophrenia is one of the most heavily stigmatized mental health disorders, said Dr. Deepak D\u2019Souza, Vikram Sodhi \u201992 Professor of Psychiatry and director of the Schizophrenia Neuropharmacology Research Group at Yale University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000l3b6nkf1dxow0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s a widespread stereotype that people with schizophrenia are a threat to others \u2014 \u201cthe homeless person walking barefoot in the winter screaming at no one in particular (or the) mass murderer compelled by their symptoms to kill strangers,\u201d said Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, the Lawrence C. Kolb Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000m3b6njg2nu3t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s the condition that people \u201cassociate with madness and psychosis and lunacy,\u201d said Lieberman, who is the author of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/Malady-of-the-Mind\/Jeffrey-A-Lieberman\/9781982136420\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Malady of the Mind<\/a>: Schizophrenia and the Path to Prevention.\u201d While some of these stereotypes are based in true symptoms that some patients experience, they aren\u2019t reflective of all patients and can prevent a holistic, compassionate view of schizophrenia as a treatable disorder that\u2019s usually more harmful to the patient than to others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000n3b6nxtszvbc0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe way society has dealt with it \u2014 from ancient times through medieval times, even until the 21st century \u2014 is to ostracize or segregate people with these severe mental disorders,\u201d Lieberman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000o3b6nmgh3rf57@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To make matters worse, among people who don\u2019t have schizophrenia, there\u2019s also the popular colloquial use of \u201cschizophrenic\u201d or \u201cschizo\u201d to describe feeling self-contradictory or frazzled by having multiple stressors or responsibilities simultaneously.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000p3b6ni4ir2zil@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Misperceptions and fears about schizophrenia can make it difficult for people to recognize its signs and seek help for themselves or others, experts say. That help is critical since the disorder is associated with co-occurring mental health issues, a lower quality of life and life expectancy, and higher rates of disability, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nimh.nih.gov%2Fhealth%2Fstatistics%2Fschizophrenia&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571686990%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=v9XMvTZvvOYxdtxfK3G9YHwWYhLGOAMvLXqiESmGg7g%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000q3b6nh5w45q53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Accordingly, among some experts there <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdoi.org%2F10.1016%2Fj.schres.2021.08.034&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571703302%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=LlAVt2yAt1fuVBw%2BCaAkyicilSO%2BAdwy%2FGD3TO%2Fy4j4%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">is growing interest<\/a> in changing the name of this chronic brain disorder. Altered perception syndrome, psychosis spectrum syndrome and neuro-emotional integration disorder were the alternatives most supported in <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2F34688117%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571719610%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=A1n2u6XBtmuQf8tsgAW2Ps1ckL9E5aHPmV1r5lDL7cY%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a 2021 survey<\/a> of nearly 1,200 people, including those who had experienced mental illness, family members, clinicians, researchers, government officials and the general public.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        When and why schizophrenia sets in<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000r3b6n4uzzq3hr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Symptoms of schizophrenia typically begin between the ages of 15 and 25, experts said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000s3b6nzszqqjkt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People might have been doing OK or even great in their lives, and then suddenly they have what experts call a \u201cfirst break\u201d in their capacity to function normally, said Weinberger, also a professor of psychiatry, neurology, neuroscience and genetic medicine at the Johns Hopkins University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmexb7lmf00003b6nw96nrjy8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo me, (schizophrenia) is the most devastating of mental illnesses \u2014 because it strikes before a person reaches their potential,\u201d D\u2019Souza said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000t3b6nq1ujl03q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Research suggests this disruption may stem from alterations in normal <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Farticles%2FPMC3080672%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ckristen.rogers%40cnn.com%7C4e9c75e6391e46e3f91b08dde4ede3db%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638918432571735713%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=PEZbs4WQhXgiX8XTRixOaion2YeqV4bQF3gLReQ8SAI%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">neurodevelopmental processes<\/a> that happen as adolescents mature \u2014 especially since the higher end of the typical age range of onset is when the brain completes maturation, D\u2019Souza said. But for some people, the stage for such changes may be set as early as infancy and require 20 years of brain maturation for the effects to become obvious, Weinberger said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000u3b6nqviqf69o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are forms of schizophrenia that can begin earlier, but it\u2019s rare, D\u2019Souza said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn000v3b6n37ic7uzf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schizophrenia predominantly occurs in males, he added. They can be \u201cextremely unsettling, tormenting and very disabling,\u201d Weinberger said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn00173b6npjjy8rdd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Someone with delusions may think the Central Intelligence Agency has infiltrated their phone to spy on them, Weinberger said, and thus remove the phone\u2019s battery. Cockburn said that this past spring, he was reading the C.S. Lewis novel \u201cThe Magician\u2019s Nephew\u201d and became fascinated with Aslan the lion\u2019s ability to sing the world of Narnia into creation from a dark void.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn00183b6nh455wtx2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI thought that was how the world began,\u201d Cockburn said. \u201cI read fantasy books and then look for the fantasy within the reality of this world.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn00193b6nf68lkb2s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Cockburn also felt that plants and birds could talk to him, and that he could \u201cconverse with the spirits,\u201d he added. A conversation with a tree had a big impact on him: \u201cIt told me I could rap, and that\u2019s what I started getting into after that happened.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn001a3b6nauvdhbuk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During some of Cockburn\u2019s escapes from psychiatric hospitals \u2014 a habit that led to admission to five or six mental hospitals over those eight years \u2014 he would strip naked and explore a forest on a snowy day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn001b3b6n3wqhrwf2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many people with schizophrenia also have hallucinations, such as talking to someone who isn\u2019t there, Weinberger said. Cockburn sometimes saw snipers outside the window of his hospital room, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn001c3b6n1k0689y7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Delusions and hallucinations can lead to fear and paranoia, Weinberger said. That paranoia can make patients think others are talking about them, plotting against them, or affecting or reading the thoughts in their own brains \u2014 which \u201cmakes them very uncomfortable in public settings, because they feel they\u2019re not safe,\u201d he added. \u201cMost individuals with schizophrenia are much more likely to feel that they\u2019re unsafe than they are to make you feel that.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4msnn001d3b6nqqmsac3l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hallucinations also commonly take the form of voices that can sometimes start out benign and darken over time, experts said. Just before his interview with CNN, he had gone on a run. He felt something beyond himself urging him to run further than he usually does, but instead of obeying, he turned around, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmet4o3ch001z3b6nfe46ds3z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI felt a little bit guilt-ridden for it,\u201d Cockburn said. \u201cBut then as I got towards the end of the run, I realized that I wouldn\u2019t have been able to finish it if I hadn\u2019t turned back at that moment. He still gets panic attacks occasionally, but the comforting stillness of sitting in a dark, cool room helps them pass.
