\n\tChanning Tatum<\/a> revealed in a new Variety cover story<\/a> that Gambit will be somewhat softening his Cajun accent in \u201cAvengers: Doomsday<\/a>,\u201d which is now in production. Tatum debuted as the Marvel superhero in last year\u2019s \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine\u201d after spending years trying and failing to get a standalone Gambit movie made under 20th Century Fox. A running joke in \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine\u201d is that nobody can understand Gambit\u2019s thick Cajun accent. Ryan Reynolds\u2019 Deadpool quips at one point: \u201cWho\u2019s your dialect coach? The Minions?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIt appears Gambit will be easier to understand in \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d which sees Tatum back to face off against Robert Downey Jr.\u2019s Doctor Doom alongside Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Chris Hemsworth and various other Marvel actors. Tatum told Variety that studio executives \u201creally had to wrap their mind around the accent and how people are going to understand him\u201d as Gambit moves forward in the MCU beyond \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m not gonna go full Cajun,\u201d Tatum said. \u201c[Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] want things to be funny, but they don\u2019t want to go full \u2018Deadpool.\u2019 They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious \u2014 when he drops the Mardi Gras mask \u2014 things do matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTatum previously told Access Hollywood<\/a> that his Gambit accent in \u201cDeadpool and Wolverine\u201d was intentional, explaining: \u201cThere was very little improv. The Cajun dialect is a very particular one. I grew up in Mississippi and my dad is from New Orleans. So it\u2019s one of those things that I grew up around it, but I\u2019ve never done it. There are certain little isms that are very Cajun-y, but we actually intended it to be somewhat unintelligible. That was sort of the joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[Ryan would] come up to be and say, \u2018I don\u2019t want to know anything that you\u2019re saying on this [take],\u2019 so I just dialed it all the way up,\u201d Tatum added. \u201cAnd then other ones he\u2019s like, \u2018All right, I\u2019ve got to understand what you\u2019re saying now.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJust how Gambit factors into \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d remains under wraps. But he\u2019s clearly got fight scenes, as Tatum also revealed to Variety that he suffered an injury on set that has resulted in him taking pain medication and will require intensive physical therapy. He had to be sidelined from some action scenes due to the injury, instead sitting in for close-ups of his face while relying on his stunt double to do the heavy lifting.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s not about the pain I feel in the moment,\u201d Tatum said. \u201cIt\u2019s knowing I can\u2019t take this back. And now I know what the next six months of my life will be like.. I just hate getting old\u2026 In my mind, I\u2019m literally still 30 years old \u2014 26, if I\u2019m honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d is set for release on Dec. 18, 2026 from Disney and Marvel Studios<\/a>.
