Looking back on Gorillaz<\/a>\u2019s 2001 debut, Damon Albarn<\/a> admitted that his falsetto-heavy vocals were less a stylistic choice and more a byproduct of the drugs he was on at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t quite believe I can still hit the falsetto. That first record has a crazy amount of falsetto\u2026 definitely related to the drugs I was taking,\u201d Albarn told Rolling Stone<\/a> in a new interview. \u201cI was a much more irresponsible human being. I was hitting some notes I really didn\u2019t think coming back I\u2019d be able to hit again.\u201d Though those notes remain in a tenor\u2019s range, Albarn notes that he quit smoking about a year-and-a-half ago, and that\u2019s given him \u201ca little more of a chance\u201d to hit them 25 years later.<\/p>\n

Albarn and his Gorillaz partner Jamie Hewlett needed to study up on the arrangements from their debut album, since they performed it in full as a part of their four-night residency<\/a> at London\u2019s Copper Box Arena for their \u201cHouse of Kong\u201d exhibition. Albarn and co. kicked off the residency on Friday, August 29th, dusting off hits like \u201cClint Eastwood\u201d and \u201cTomorrow Comes Today\u201d amid deeper cuts like \u201cDouble Bass\u201d and \u201cGhost Train,\u201d which were performed live for the first time.<\/p>\n

Gorillaz then followed their self-titled celebration with a play-through of\u00a0Demon Days<\/a> on Saturday, August 30th; they\u2019ll return to the stage tonight (September 2nd) performing their third album\u00a0Plastic Beach in full, with the final night (September 3rd) serving as a \u201cMystery Show.\u201d The exhibition, which celebrates Gorillaz\u2019s 25th anniversary and their distinctive visual universe, runs in London until September 8th.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in Albarn and Hewlett\u2019s interview with Rolling Stone, the duo made it clear that the 25th anniversary celebrations mark their limit for looking backward, and are readying their focus on new music once the exhibition has concluded. \u201cIf you can make it, you\u2019re welcome \u2013 after that, it\u2019s back to the new stuff,\u201d Hewlett said. Albarn had previously teased a new Gorillaz album<\/a> set to arrive this year, but neither member has confirmed a release date or title.<\/p>\n

In other Gorillaz news, the band\u2019s virtual members are now playable characters in\u00a0Fortnite<\/a> for a limited time.<\/p>\n
