Explained simply

Life rarely runs on a script. One day it’s a regular morning, and the next, you’re staring at an unexpected hospital bill, a pink slip from work, or a leaking roof that refuses to wait. These surprises can derail your finances if you’re not ready, and that’s where an emergency fund becomes your anchor. Think of it as a financial parachute you can pull when turbulence hits. But how much should you really tuck away for this safety net?

IndiaToday.in spoke with Ranjit Jha, MD & CEO, Rurash Financials, and Saurav Ghosh, Co-founder of Jiraaf, to decode the essentials.

WHY AN EMERGENCY FUND IS YOUR SAFETY NET

An emergency fund isn’t about chasing high returns; it’s about peace of mind. It keeps you from dipping into long-term investments or swiping expensive credit cards when sudden expenses arise.

As Jha explains, “An emergency fund is a dedicated financial cushion created to handle unexpected situations and is crucial for financial stability. It can help in handling unexpected expenses, such as medical emergencies, job loss, urgent travel, or sudden home/vehicle repairs.”

In short, it keeps your life steady when everything else feels uncertain.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU REALLY SAVE?

There’s no magic number. Experts recommend setting aside at least three to six months of essential expenses, rent/EMIs, groceries, school fees, premiums, and utility bills.

“If the family monthly expenditure is Rs 1 lakh, one should consider setting aside Rs 3–6 lakh as an emergency corpus,” Jha points out. For entrepreneurs or those with irregular incomes, the target should stretch to 9–12 months.

Ghosh adds, “The size of an emergency fund must reflect your unique financial ecosystem. Salaried individuals with steady pay cheques may find three months sufficient. For entrepreneurs, freelancers, or families with dependents, six to nine months is a prudent timeframe.”

WHERE SHOULD YOU PARK YOUR EMERGENCY FUND?

Your emergency fund isn’t meant to make you rich, it’s meant to be there, instantly. Popular choices include savings accounts, fixed deposits, and liquid mutual funds.

Experts suggest a mix of all three. Keep a small portion in your savings account for immediate access, some in FDs, and the rest in liquid mutual funds for better growth.

As Ghosh puts it, “Emergency funds demand instant liquidity, zero risk, and some return. No single product achieves all three, so diversification is essential.”

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Many people either save too little or stash the money in the wrong place. Parking emergency funds in real estate, equities, or long-term FDs makes them difficult to access when you actually need them.

“Keeping aside too little, not even enough to cover two months, defeats the whole purpose,” warns Jha. “Another mistake is mixing emergency funds with long-term investments, making them inaccessible during a crisis.”

Another common pitfall is treating the emergency fund like a piggy bank for non-essentials. Discipline is everything.

WHAT IF YOUR INCOME IS LIMITED?

Saving for emergencies can feel daunting if you’re on a tight budget. But you don’t need a big start, consistency matters more than size.

“For those with tight cash flows, the journey begins with habit, not size,” advises Ghosh. “Start with Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 a month, automate it through recurring deposits or liquid fund SIPs, and redirect discretionary spends, like dining out or unused subscriptions — into the emergency fund. Windfalls such as bonuses, tax refunds, or gifts can speed up the process.”

Jha echoes this, suggesting, “Automated savings via SIPs into liquid funds or recurring deposits help build gradually. Tracking expenses and trimming luxuries also go a long way in creating a solid corpus.”

Simply put, an emergency fund is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Whether it’s three months’ worth or a full year, the goal is simple: create a safety net that shields you from life’s unpredictable storms without derailing your financial journey.

As Jha sums it up, “Even during unexpected disruptions, your financial state remains stable if you have an emergency fund in place.”

– Ends

Published By:

Jasmine anand

Published On:

Sep 2, 2025

Life rarely runs on a script.
