{"id":115529,"date":"2025-09-03T01:08:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T01:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/115529\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T01:08:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T01:08:14","slug":"alberta-polio-survivors-fear-horrifying-virus-could-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/115529\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta polio survivors fear \u2018horrifying\u2019 virus could return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/polio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Polio<\/a>, a highly contagious viral infection that can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9056478\/polio-virus-explainer-aug-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cause paralysis and death<\/a>, has been eradicated in Canada for decades thanks to widespread vaccination efforts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756110368_560_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There is no cure for polio; it can only be prevented, and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10919974\/polio-eradicated-canada-thanks-to-vaccine-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">doctors warn if vaccine rates continue to decline<\/a> as they have in recent years, it could open the door to a return of the virus in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d said Pat Murray, a polio survivor who contracted the disease at just nine months old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Murray was diagnosed in Winnipeg in 1953, at the height of the polio epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>She was told her neighbour\u2019s daughter shared her lollipop with her and her sister. Both got very sick with the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad told me that when I was in bed, I could only move my head from side to side \u2014 the rest of my body was limp,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>\n<p>While many people infected with the virus experience mild or no symptoms, others develop more serious complications, including permanent disability. In severe cases, polio can lead to paralysis, muscle weakness, and in some cases, death.<\/p>\n<p>Murray now lives with post-polio syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that can affect people several decades after an initial infection, anywhere from 10 to 40 years later, according to the Cleveland Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The academic medical centre says approximately 30 to 40 per cent of people who\u2019ve had polio will develop PPS. It causes gradual muscle weakness and atrophy.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no cure, so treatment focuses on managing symptoms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs time goes by, you lose more and more,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cYour muscles get weaker and weaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'WHO warns of global polio resurgence'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/polio.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:27<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWHO warns of global polio resurgence\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Murray is a member of the Wildrose Polio Support Society. That was me,\u201d he told Global News, recalling the moment doctors fused his ankle so he no longer needed support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cI didn\u2019t have a sweet 16 party. I had a brace-burning party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Ferne Hymanyk, polio struck when she was nine. She remembers being sent from her family\u2019s rural Alberta farm to the Edmonton General Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never been away from home, so it was a very traumatic time,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was a ward that was all polios. Both legs are affected, my one shoulder was affected, my spine is affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group all gathered to share their stories with Global News because of their concerns about the possibility of seeing the virus return to Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(It would be) horrifying,\u201d Hymanyk said. \u201cIt would be very upsetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They hope that by sharing what they have been through for decades, others will take the warnings about declining vaccine rates seriously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just does not make any sense to me that people would rather believe misinformation and disinformation than the good, solid, hard science that means that your kids can grow up and lead a normal life,\u201d Murray said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the early 20th century, polio outbreaks began to happen more regularly, especially in summer months, with cities seeing large numbers of cases,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/museum\/online\/story-of-cdc\/polio\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the first polio vaccine was developed in 1955, the disease \u2014 spread mostly from person to person, through contaminated water and via fecal particles \u2014 was among the world\u2019s most feared, paralyzing hundreds of thousands of children annually.<\/p>\n<p>Little was known about how the disease spread, leading to closed pools in summer and empty playgrounds as parents tried to protect their children from falling ill.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: '\u2018Iron Lung Man\u2019 dies at 78 after more than 70 years of paralysis from polio'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/WE_IRON_LUNG_VMS.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:21<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u2018Iron Lung Man\u2019 dies at 78 after more than 70 years of paralysis from polio\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>People avoided crowded places during epidemics, and hospital wards filled with children encased in iron lungs after the virus immobilized their breathing muscles.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization and partners embarked on a polio vaccination campaign in 1988 with the bold goal of eradication \u2014 a feat seen only once before for human diseases, with smallpox in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>They came close several times, including in 2021, when just five cases of the natural virus were reported in Pakistan and Afghanistan. But since then, cases have rebounded.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries where transmission of polio \u2014 which is highly infectious, affects mainly children under five and can cause irreversible paralysis within hours \u2014 has never been interrupted. A worldwide campaign has focused most of its attention and funding there for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Polio was eradicated in Canada in 1994, but dropping rates of vaccination have caused doctors to speculate it could return.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Doctors cite concern over polio vaccine politics in U.S.'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/AFF_POLIO_VAX_IMPORTANCE_PKG_ONLINE_STILL.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:41<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDoctors cite concern over polio vaccine politics in U.S.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>According to Statistics Canada, around 91 per cent of Canadian children have received the recommended polio vaccine doses by their second birthday, below the 95 per cent needed for strong herd protection. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/immunization-vaccines\/vaccination-coverage\/2021-highlights-childhood-national-immunization-coverage-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">That national number has remained relatively unchanged for over a decade<\/a>, according to Statistics Canada data.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>However in Alberta, Statistics Canada said the estimated polio vaccine coverage by two years of age (meaning the child had received three doses) dropped in the past decade: about 85 per cent in 2021 compared to 93 per cent in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\tRelated News\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10919974\/polio-eradicated-canada-thanks-to-vaccine-efforts\/\" class=\"c-posts__inner\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-posts__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-526521576.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"336\" height=\"224\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tPolio is eradicated in Canada. Will vaccine skepticism usher in a return?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Polio is part of the routine vaccine schedule in Canada and is given to infants as part of a combination vaccine. It\u2019s called DTaP-IPV-Hib-HB and protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and hepatitis B.<\/p>\n<p>The vaccine is typically administered in multiple doses during the first few years of life to ensure long-lasting protection against the disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/polio\/vaccines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">According to the CDC,<\/a>\u00a0the polio vaccine protects against severe disease caused by poliovirus in almost everyone who has received all the recommended doses.<\/p>\n<p>Two doses of IPV provide at least 90 per cent protection. Three doses of IPV provide at least 99 per cent protection. The most common side effect is a sore arm after the shot.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO says as long as a single child remains infected, kids everywhere are at risk. Eradication demands near-perfection \u2013 zero polio cases and immunizing more than 95 per cent of children.<\/p>\n<p>For survivors, the discovery of the vaccine was life-changing.
