{"id":117527,"date":"2025-09-03T20:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T20:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/117527\/"},"modified":"2025-09-03T20:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T20:00:08","slug":"thomas-phifer-places-arched-pavilion-in-flood-resilient-manhattan-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/117527\/","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Phifer places arched pavilion in flood-resilient Manhattan park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New York architecture studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/thomas-phifer-and-partners\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Phifer and Partners<\/a> has created a red concrete pavilion for infrastructure Battery Park City Authority&#8217;s recently completed Wagner Park in Lower Manhattan, which was designed by infrastructure firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/aecom\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AECOM<\/a> for increased flood resilience. <\/p>\n<p>The Wagner Pavilion sits at one of the highest points of Wagner Park, a newly developed section of the shoreline at the southernmost tip of Manhattan that is part of a general South Battery Park City Resiliency Project.<\/p>\n<p>Working with the landscape and engineering teams at <a href=\"https:\/\/aecom.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AECOM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasphifer.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thomas Phifer and Partners<\/a> created a red concrete-clad pavilion with two wings that resemble, in plan, a pair of lungs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243098 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/wagner-park-lower-manhattan-_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Wagner park in Lower Manhattan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1328\"  \/>Thomas Phifer and Partners has created a pavilion in a park in Lower Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>The two wings splay out from a central entry point so that the entirety of the structure can act as a &#8220;gateway&#8221; to the park, according to the team, an effect aided by the &#8220;tremendous&#8221; vaults that line the wings on the parkside.<\/p>\n<p>The pavilion holds a restaurant and classrooms, as well as a rooftop garden with vantage points designed to provide views across the harbour to the Statue of Liberty.<\/p>\n<p>This was fitted with parapet planters to increase the profile of the structure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243102 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/wagner-park-lower-manhattan-_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Wagner Park\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1328\"  \/>The pavilion was designed as an entry point at the higher part of the park<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are extremely proud to have contributed to the design of this important urban waterfront park, reimagined with sustainability and resiliency at the heart of our design vision,&#8221; said studio founder Thomas Phifer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Wagner Pavilion is a focal point, offering expansive views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and New York Harbor, while also hosting community activities and providing dining opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/02\/18\/schonherr-karens-minde-axis-copenhagen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/schonherr-karens-minde-axis-copenhagen-sq_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Karens Minde Axis by Sch\u00f8nherr\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Sch\u00f8nherr combines flood defence with urban park in Copenhagen\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pavilion is a visual signifier of the revamp \u2013 the scale of which is difficult to discern with the naked eye, but which involved extensive engineering to make the shoreline of flood-prone, densely populated Lower Manhattan more resilient.<\/p>\n<p>In order to make the park and the low-lying tip of Manhattan more resistant to flooding, the whole park integrates different flood walls and drainage systems throughout.<\/p>\n<p>A massive floodwall driven down into the bedrock represents the slope on the site, where the esplanade \u2013 which also serves as a relieving platform \u2013 transitions into the landscaped park.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243101 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/wagner-park-lower-manhattan-_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x479.jpg\" alt=\"Flood resilient Wagner park\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1328\"  \/>The stepped park was designed for flood resiliency<\/p>\n<p>AECOM included different plantings at different levels of the park, including a terraced &#8220;living shoreline&#8221; at one end that fosters marine life where the public space meets the water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Wagner Park, we integrated infrastructure and placemaking to create a public space that serves the community and protects against rising sea levels,\u201d said AECOM principal Gonzalo Cruz.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From its flexible open lawn to its universally accessible gardens, this park reflects the power of collaboration in creating a landscape that responds to changes in climate, invites gathering and supports daily life for the next generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2243103 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/wagner-park-lower-manhattan-_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x613.jpg\" alt=\"Wagner Park Manhattan\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1702\"  \/>Wagner Park is part of a larger resiliency project along the waterline in Manhattan<\/p>\n<p>Flooding remains a distinct threat to coastal cities as sea levels rise with global heating.
