{"id":118226,"date":"2025-09-04T02:28:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T02:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118226\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T02:28:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T02:28:10","slug":"no-such-thing-as-a-friendly-captains-talk-up-the-soccer-ashes-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118226\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;No such thing as a friendly&#8217; \u2014 captains talk up the Soccer Ashes series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rival captains Chris Wood and Milos Degenek have made it clear there\u2019s plenty at stake when the All Whites and Socceroos meet in their two-match Soccer Ashes series.<\/p>\n<p>As well as bragging rights between the trans-Tasman rivals, results of the games in Canberra and Auckland will influence both teams\u2019 positions in the next FIFA men\u2019s world rankings, and they\u2019ll decide which pots they\u2019ll go into for the FIFA Men\u2019s World Cup draw to be held on December 6 (NZT).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsoffootballnz.com\/2025\/08\/24\/breakfast-broadcast-will-reveal-who-all-whites-will-play-at-2026-fifa-world-cup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">READ MORE: Breakfast broadcast will reveal who All Whites will play at 2026 FIFA World Cup<\/a> &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand and Australia are among the first 13 nations to qualify for the 48-team tournament.<\/p>\n<p>Players are also mindful of how their performances will impact their chances of selection for next year\u2019s World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, there\u2019s no friendly games,\u201d Australia captain Degenek said in a dual interview with Wood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery game is a chance for us to improve and get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acknowledging the competition between the two countries, Wood said what happened on the pitch, stayed on the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff the pitch, it\u2019s a different story.
