{"id":118367,"date":"2025-09-04T03:52:07","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T03:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118367\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T03:52:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T03:52:07","slug":"deadly-disease-found-in-bats-at-washingtons-san-juan-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118367\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly disease found in bats at Washington&#8217;s San Juan National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. \u2013 Officials with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:U.s.;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.s.<\/a> Geological Survey (USGS) are raising the alarm after a shocking discovery inside a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Washington;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Washington<\/a> state national park on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lab tests conducted by the USGS detected the presence of a fungus that causes what is known as White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) in three bats at San Juan Island <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/national-parks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:National Park;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">National Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">WNS is a fungal disease that can kill hibernating bats, according to the National Park Service. The fungus named Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd) likely originated in Asia or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/europe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Europe;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Europe<\/a>, with the first positive case detected in Washington back in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Most notably, this disease has been responsible for killing millions of bats across the country since it was first observed in the U.S. in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-york\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:New York;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">New York<\/a> in 2006.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Since then, the disease has spread through most U.S. states and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Canadian;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Canadian<\/a> provinces.
