The 11th stage of the Spanish Vuelta was cut short and finished without a winner because of a disruption by pro-Palestinian protesters near the finish line in the Basque Country city of Bilbao on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The protesters appeared to be targeting riders from the Israel Premier Tech team, which includes 28-year-old Pier-Andr\u00e9 C\u00f4t\u00e9 of Gaspe, Que. Some attempted to invade the road when the riders of the Israeli team crossed in front of them, prompting organizers and security staff to rush in to try to contain them behind the security fences.<\/p>\n

Police were called in to contain the protesters, many of whom carried Palestine flags and pro-Palestine signs.<\/p>\n

Race officials made an announcement to the teams as the riders had about 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) to go in the 157.4-kilometre (98-mile) stage that also started in Bilbao.<\/p>\n

\u201cDue to some incidents at the finish line, we have decided to take the time at 3 kilometres before the line. We won\u2019t have a stage winner. We will give the points for the mountain classification and the intermediate sprint, but not on the finish line,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The start of the stage also had been disrupted by protesters who forced race officials to pause the peloton for a few minutes.<\/p>\n

The police appeared to have the crowd under control by the finish, forming a line to keep the protesters from going over the security fences, but officials decided it was safer to keep riders from reaching that point.<\/p>\n

At the Tour de France in July, a man protesting the participation of Israel Premier Tech ran onto the course as the leaders raced for the finish line. A security guard ran out and apprehended the man. The team had previously faced protests because of its association with Israel, which has killed 63,633 Palestinians since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The war was sparked by the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel that killed some 1,200 people on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

Race technical director Kiko Garcia told radio station SER that there was a risk of more protests if the Israeli team remained in the race.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone needs to try to find a solution,\u201d Garcia said, \u201cwhich for me right now is that the Israeli team realizes that by being here it doesn\u2019t help the safety of everyone else. But we can\u2019t make that decision, the team has to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Israel Premier Tech, however, said in a statement late Wednesday that it \u201cremains committed to racing on\u201d at the Vuelta.<\/p>\n

\u201cAny other course of action sets a dangerous precedent in the sport of cycling \u2013 not only for Israel Premier Tech, but for all teams,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Israel Premier Tech said it respects the right to protest \u201cas long as those protests remain peaceful and do not compromise the safety of the peloton.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the behaviour of protesters in Bilbao today was not only dangerous, but counterproductive to their cause and deprived the Basque cycling fans, some of the best cycling fans in the world, of the stage finish they deserve,\u201d the team\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n

Overall Spanish Vuelta leader Jonas Vingegaard, of team Visma-Lease a Bike, said it was disappointing not to be able to finish the stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a big shame, we really would have loved to win the stage,\u201d he said, adding that he was looking forward to a strong finish by his team on the day of his son\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n

Tom Pidcock, a British rider from team Q36.5 Pro Cycling, had been ahead during the final parts of the stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to describe the disappointment, to be honest,\u201d he said. \u201cI felt like today was my day. I had a good chance to win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pidcock continued through the finish line despite the decision to cut the stage short.<\/p>\n
