{"id":118465,"date":"2025-09-04T04:49:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T04:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118465\/"},"modified":"2025-09-04T04:49:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T04:49:10","slug":"campaigns-heat-up-for-6-edmonton-mayor-hopefuls-as-polling-released-edmonton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/118465\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaigns heat up for 6 Edmonton mayor hopefuls as polling released &#8211; Edmonton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Less than six weeks from <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/edmonton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Edmonton\u2019s<\/a> municipal election, campaigns are heating up for the city\u2019s mayoral candidates.\u00a0Traditionally, after the Labour Day long weekend is when we see campaigns ramp up to full force.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A Leger poll released at the end of August ranked mayoral voting intention:<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Knack \u2013 12 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Tim Cartmell \u2013 10 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Michael Walters \u2013 7 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Rahim Jaffer \u2013 5 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Omar Mohammad -4 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Tony Caterina \u2013 2 per cent<\/p>\n<p>Political analyst John Brennan said Jaffer, Mohammad and Caterina have an outside shot, but suspects the mayoralty campaign will be a horse race between Cartmell, Knack and Walters.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Brennan said it\u2019s going to boil down to what people want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe saw from that poll, especially for Edmontonians who are 55 and older\u2026 The most important thing to them is the that their taxes keep increasing,\u201d Brennan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-blockquote__content l-article__blockquoteContent\">\u201cThis is why taxes and fiscal responsibility is a big issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The candidates have their own solution for that, as well as other issues Edmontonians are concerned about.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Knack\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Leger poll also showed Edmontonians think the city is on the wrong track.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11191625\/andrew-knack-edmonton-mayor-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Andrew Knack<\/a> was first elected to council in 2013 and has represented his west Edmonton ward ever since. He said he isn\u2019t looking for a complete overhaul at city hall but will listen to citizens and let that play into every decision he makes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy focus as city councillor, and what I would continue to focus on as Edmonton\u2019s next mayor, is to deliver on what Edmontonians are telling me to do,\u201d Knack said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the only councillor that\u2019s running, that\u2019s been either a current member or former member of council that\u2019s delivered clear cost savings over the years to help provide greater affordability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Knack said he will vote against the pack when he needs to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to make decisions that are best for Edmontonians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knack said while he was door-knocking he heard three common concerns, with affordability at the top of the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already made a motion last December to reform how the city\u2019s going to do the next four-year budget process. So, as mayor, what I want to make sure we\u2019re doing is taking that process and getting out across the entire city,\u201d Knack said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Politics<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Tim Cartmell<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10880030\/tim-cartmell-edmonton-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tim Cartmell,<\/a> who has represented his southwest Edmonton ward on council since 2017, said he stands out as a candidate because he is the only one running with a party: Better Edmonton.<\/p>\n<p>Cartmell said if he and his team are elected, they will work together to tackle the city\u2019s big issues.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1756402221_230_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA mayor is a single vote,\u201d Cartmell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody else can bring the combination of a team that supports them, the knowledge and experience to lead teams, the knowledge and experience on how city council works, and as an agent of change, because I have not supported largely what a lot of people didn\u2019t want to see happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Cartmell said the best way to address affordability is through supply and working with Greenfield partners that are working with new neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwitch our infill focus to those great big places where we can actually add thousands, if not tens of thousands of residential units.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cartmell said the way to do that is to \u201cexploit\u201d big, open spaces to build infill and create the housing supply that is needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake away this, quite frankly, ideological focus on established neighbourhoods, and move to Blatchford, east downtown, the old northlands site.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael Walters<\/p>\n<p>Former city councillor <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11296879\/edmonton-mayor-race-michael-walters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Michael Walters<\/a> said he will bring the type of leadership Edmonton needs, starting with making the city more affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Walters was first elected to Edmonton city council in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/7299119\/michael-walters-not-running-for-re-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">did not seek re-election in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said the city needs to build as many housing units in as many places as possible, in a responsible way. He said sites like Blatchford and the old coliseum site are good examples.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just building as many units as we can. I think most importantly, we made a commitment to citizens that when we built and invested billions of dollars in LRT construction, we were going to put a lot of housing along those lines to make those transit-friendly neighbourhoods,\u201d Walters said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to get back to that commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walters said the city has become uncompetitive with neighbouring municipalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs our tax rates go up, it\u2019s like triple the impact for the business sector. It shouldn\u2019t matter who\u2019s in the throne of the provincial chair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the city\u2019s mayor should be able to coordinate effectively with the provincial government and the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat relationship is completely broke and I hope to really focus on fixing that because that is something I have a fair amount of experience with,\u201d Jaffer said.<\/p>\n<p>Jaffer said he will be releasing his full platform the second week of September.<\/p>\n<p>Omar Mohammad<\/p>\n<p>A political outsider, pediatric dentist <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11196398\/edmonton-mayoral-candidate-mohammad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Omar Mohammad<\/a> said the way to help with affordability is to freeze property taxes for everyone in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe I am the only talking about freezing property taxes\u2026 Balancing both operating and capital budgets, stop the borrowing and putting us further into debt,\u201d Mohammad said. \u201cWhat we have to do is pause all non essential major capital projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said we have 50 to 70,000 people coming to Edmonton every year. \u201cWe need to increase our residential and non-residential tax base, have more taxpayers pay into the pot as opposed to the other way around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad said another key piece of his platform is housing-first solutions to help people get out of homelessness and be provided with wraparound services.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad said he also stands out because he is not a career politician and if he is mayor, would represent the change Edmontonians are looking for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(Edmontonians) see the decline in our city and like most Edmontonians, I don\u2019t believe the same politicians that put us into this mess really deserve another chance at making things worse,\u201d Mohammad said.<\/p>\n<p>Tony Caterina<\/p>\n<p>Former Edmonton city councillor<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10878123\/edmonton-councillor-tony-caterina-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> Tony Caterina<\/a> is focusing his campaign on affordability.<\/p>\n<p>Caterina served on council from 2007 until 2021, when he lost to current councillor Anne Stevenson.<\/p>\n<p>He said he is showing that by not overspending in his campaign, explaining that he\u2019s not buying signs and products that will end up in the landfill. He wants his supporters to tie white a ribbon to their door.<\/p>\n<p>Caterina said that is also how he would run the city \u2014 he wouldn\u2019t overspend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe overspending that has happened the last four years also drives taxation up,\u201d Caterina said. \u201cMy focus is on basically five core services that the city should provide and should provide very good service before anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He said those items are policing, fire infrastructure, waste management, snow and ice control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything outside of that is nice to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caterina said he would also work on safety and security, as well as infill housing solutions.<\/p>\n<p>To find a full list of all election candidates on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/city_government\/municipal_elections\/candidates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">City of Edmonton website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Mayoral Debate<\/p>\n<p>The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a mayoral debate on Sept. 12th, which will be broadcasted on Global News. The top five candidates based on the Leger poll have been invited to debate.<\/p>\n<p>The Leger polling showed voter intention for Caterina at two per cent, ranking him in sixth place.
