(Photo: Tim de Waele\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Updated September 5, 2025 03:24PM<\/p>\n<p>LA VEGA, Spain (Velo) \u2014 Spain\u2019s hardest climb had an American accent Friday as <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/category\/sepp-kuss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sepp Kuss<\/a> and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/category\/matthew-riccitello\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matthew Riccitello<\/a> powered into the top 10 overall at the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-primary underline hover:text-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/category\/vuelta-a-espana\/?scope=anon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vuelta a Espa\u00f1a<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s assault on the infamous steeps of the Angliru caused some pain as well as damage in the GC.<\/p>\n<p>Both Riccitello and Kuss were on good days, and each were rewarded with a bump up on the general classification.<\/p>\n<p>For the 2023 Vuelta champion, it\u2019s all about helping Jonas Vingegaard to win the overall title. Anything else is a bonus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always look forward to this day, even though I\u2019m always a little scared,\u201d Kuss said of his return to the Angliru. \u201cI love these steep climbs, they get me excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was on these beyond-steep ramps where Kuss, Vingegaard and ex-teammate Primo\u017e Rogli\u0107 sparred for control of the 2023 Vuelta before Kuss withstood the barrage to carry red to Madrid to become America\u2019s first male grand tour winner in a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Flash forward to 2025, and Kuss is back in his familiar role as the peloton\u2019s best superdomestique.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was a huge effort\u2019<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-964502\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2233867080-720x480.jpg\" alt=\"Kuss\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/>Kuss made the select group at the most decisive part of the climb.  (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Visma-Lease a Bike threw down the gauntlet Friday, with Matteo Jorgenson taking the final pulls for the Kuss and Vingegaard cut loose on the lower ramps of the 12.5km super-sized climb.<\/p>\n<p>Vingegaard was disappointed he didn\u2019t get the win, and tipped his hat to stage-winner Jo\u00e3o Almeida who attacked relentlessly all the way up the wall-like face.<\/p>\n<p>The Dane carries the red leader\u2019s jersey in Saturday\u2019s throw-down at La Farrapona, the other Asturian monster that could inflict even more damage than the Angliru.<\/p>\n<p>The Coloradan paced his Visma-Lease a Bike captain through the brutal early gradients, then settled in once Almeida launched his decisive attack with six kilometers to go. Kuss held firm alongside Jai Hindley to the summit to finish fourth and jumped to 10th overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a huge effort,\u201d Kuss said Friday. \u201cThe pace was even higher in the final. Jonas looked good. My legs felt great, even though Dylan and Wilco rode at such an incredible pace in the first three hours that I wondered if I was going to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jorgenson, who started seventh, dropped to 11th on the brutal climb.<\/p>\n<p>Riccitello surges into 7th overall<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-964498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2233862505-720x480.jpg\" alt=\"Riccitello\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/>Riccitello move up into seventh overall after surviving the Angliru grinder. (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Just behind Kuss, Riccitello confirmed his emergence as one of the peloton\u2019s sharpest young climbers with perhaps his best grand tour climb of his young career.<\/p>\n<p>The 23-year-old Arizonan scrapped with Tom Pidcock, Felix Gall, and Giulio Pellizzari in the second chasing group before crossing eighth on the stage.<\/p>\n<p>The effort lifted him from 11th to seventh overall, his best GC position this deep into a grand tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never done a climb in a race that was anything like this one. It was pretty crazy,\u201d he said. \u201cOn a climb that steep it\u2019s really difficult to find a rhythm as you are struggling just to get the pedals around. This was really something I have never experienced in a race before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Riccitello \u2014 linked to a move to Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale in 2026 \u2014 is avoiding trouble and moving up in his third run at a grand tour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have super legs but I also didn\u2019t have bad legs.
