TORONTO \u2014 Ryan Reynolds says mounting tensions between Canada and the U.S. haven\u2019t changed anything for him as a Canuck in Hollywood.<\/p>\n

The \u201cDeadpool\u201d star preached unity during an onstage conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival, when chief programming officer Anita Lee asked him what it was like being a Canadian in Los Angeles during this \u201celbows up\u201d era of increased nationalism.<\/p>\n

In a nearly five-minute answer to the question, Reynolds said he\u2019s always held Canadian values, including conflict resolution, and he seeks \u201cto learn, rather than win.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reynolds is at TIFF to promote the new documentary \u201cJohn Candy: I Like Me,\u201d which he produced. <\/p>\n

He says his approach allows him to have collaborative \u2014 not combative \u2014 conversations with people whose views differ from his own.<\/p>\n

The Vancouver-born actor-producer-entrepreneur says he doesn\u2019t have to agree with someone to work with them, and he doesn\u2019t like the \u201cus vs. them\u201d mentality of identity politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cSitting on set in America and working with somebody who\u2019s MAGA \u2014 I\u2019m not MAGA; I\u2019m not extreme anything, but certainly not that way \u2014 and I say, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s swap phones for a second. Let\u2019s see your algorithm. Check out mine,\u2019\u201d he recalled. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s cool. Like you would be blown away. I remember looking at it and going to this guy, I was like, \u2018oh that\u2019s compelling. And I kind of get yeah I see what you mean.\u2019 And he looked at mine and he said, \u2018It\u2019s fine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Reynolds says he thinks sports games and movie theatres are great venues for people with differing opinions to find common ground.<\/p>\n

Reynolds\u2019 documentary opened the festival on Thursday, and Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a speech before the screening<\/a>, walking out to a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

As she welcomed Reynolds to the stage on Friday, Lee quipped that there was a \u201cCaptain Canada competition\u201d between Reynolds and Carney the previous night.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a fair fight,\u201d Reynolds quipped, \u201cbecause one day he will no longer be prime minister.\u201d<\/p>\n
