The cost: $1.5 billion. <\/p>\n<p>A judge still needs to approve the settlement, but lawyers representing the group of authors celebrated the major update in the case. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As best as we can tell, it\u2019s the largest copyright recovery ever,&#8221; Justin Nelson, a lawyer for the authors, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/anthropic-copyright-authors-settlement-training-f294266bc79a16ec90d2ddccdf435164\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Associated Press<\/a>. &#8220;It is the first of its kind in the AI era.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The authors&#8217; class-action lawsuit argued that Anthropic took pirated copies of the book to train its AI chatbot, Claude. Let&#8217;s just say the AI agent is not a business tycoon.<\/p>\n<p>        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aparna Sridhar, Anthropic\u2019s deputy general counsel, emphasized <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2025\/09\/first-of-its-kind-ai-settlement-anthropic-to-pay-authors-1-5-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to Ars Technica<\/a> in a statement that the court found &#8220;Anthropic\u2019s approach to training AI models constitutes fair use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s settlement, if approved, will resolve the plaintiffs\u2019 remaining legacy claims,&#8221; Sridhar told Ars. &#8220;We remain committed to developing safe AI systems that help people and organizations extend their capabilities, advance scientific discovery and solve complex problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Should the settlement ultimately be approved, it could prove to be an important landmark in the fight against AI companies.
