{"id":126149,"date":"2025-09-07T08:16:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-07T08:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/126149\/"},"modified":"2025-09-07T08:16:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T08:16:06","slug":"yes-i-cheated-a-little-ryan-reynolds-finally-admits-he-personally-leaked-the-deadpool-test-footage-online-in-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/126149\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Yes, I Cheated a Little&#8217; \u2014 Ryan Reynolds Finally Admits He Personally Leaked the Deadpool Test Footage Online in 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Ryan Reynolds has finally admitted he personally leaked the Deadpool test footage back in 2014 that directly led to 20th Century Fox approving an R-rated movie based on what was then considered a \u201cfringe\u201d comic book character.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While this won\u2019t come as much of a surprise to fans, Reynolds came clean at the Toronto International Film Festival this week, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/ryan-reynolds-finally-admits-leaking-deadpool-test-footage-11804700\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, saying he was \u201cgrateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While Deadpool is now one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with last year\u2019s Deadpool &amp; Wolverine earning over a billion dollars at the global box office, Reynolds struggled to convince executives at 20th Century Fox to give him the adult-oriented standalone Deadpool movie he so craved, after portraying Wade Wilson \/ Weapon XI in 2009\u2019s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets-prd.ignimgs.com\/2025\/09\/06\/gettyimages-2233921355-1757191237355.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img alt=\"null\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressive-image article-image article-image-full-size jsx-1809694635 jsx-2338608387\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"\/><\/a>Ryan Reynolds has finally come clean on the Deadpool test footage leak. Photo by Mathew Tsang\/GC Images.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">CGI test footage, produced by filmmaker Tim Miller in 2012 to show what a live-action, R-rated Deadpool movie would look like, emerged online in 2014, three years after Reynolds had played Hal Jordan in the disastrous Green Lantern movie.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">It features the \u2018Merc with a mouth\u2019 in full adult-oriented wise-cracking mode, breaking the fourth wall and the bones of bad guys throughout. Fans loved it, strong-arming 20th Century Fox into giving the thumbs up to a Deadpool film in all its R-rated glory.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">&#8220;Yes, I cheated a little, but I think I was onto something that people would be interested in,&#8221; Reynolds said at TIFF, over a decade later. \u201cAnd I&#8217;m grateful that I listened to that instinct, and I&#8217;m grateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just thinking about the Deadpool Test Footage today <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/00E73Dzy0N\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/00E73Dzy0N<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nicholas (@NicholasPas5) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NicholasPas5\/status\/1580981494289268737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">October 14, 2022<\/a> <\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Indeed! 2016\u2019s Deadpool made nearly $800 million at the box office, as did the sequel, 2018\u2019s Deadpool 2. 2024\u2019s <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/deadpool-wolverine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Deadpool &amp; Wolverine<\/a>, which brought both characters into the MCU, made a whopping $1.3 billion. It is the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">&#8220;I&#8217;d shot test footage for it a couple years before, and the studio just didn&#8217;t want anything to do with it,&#8221; Reynolds explained. &#8220;And Deadpool&#8217;s a fringe character. People didn&#8217;t really know who he was, and I loved him. I was obsessed with it because I loved that he knew he was in a comic book movie. It was kind of meta, it was kind of new. But the test footage existed, and it really was a case study of how this could work. And they just wouldn&#8217;t do anything with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Then, finally, the truth: &#8220;Some a**hole leaks it online and I&#8217;m like, you know, looking at the guy in the mirror brushing my teeth. And I&#8217;m like, &#8216;Dude, what have you done? This could be punishable by law!&#8217; But the internet forced the studio to say, &#8216;We&#8217;re gonna make this movie,&#8217; and 24 hours later, that movie had a green light.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Most Surprising Avengers and Marvel Characters Not Announced for Doomsday<img alt=\"Despite five hours of streamed casting announcements, there are still several characters and actors fans are surprised won\u2019t be in Avengers: Doomsday. &#10;&lt;br&gt;&#10;&lt;br&gt;&#10;Some we knew about \u2013 such as Elizabeth Olsen\u2019s Scarlet Witch and Benedict Cumberbatch\u2019s Doctor Strange \u2013 but the following omissions are notable given the cosmic cross-over nature of what\u2019s shaping up to be an Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four cinematic extravaganza.&#10;\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressive-image jsx-2021719738 image aspect-ratio aspect-ratio-16-9 jsx-2605834259 jsx-2338608387 hover-opacity\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-cy=\"progressive-image\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">The question now is, will Reynolds reprise his role as Deadpool in next year\u2019s Avengers: Doomsday, or in a potential Deadpool 4? Deadpool reportedly will turn up in Doomsday in some fashion, although not as a member of the Avengers. While Marvel Studios has yet to make an announcement, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/ryan-reynolds-shares-marvel-tease-and-fans-are-now-convinced-deadpool-is-returning-for-avengers-doomsday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reynolds has also teased his return<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Last month, <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/marvel-reportedly-focusing-on-an-x-men-movie-with-younger-talent-to-keep-the-cost-down-as-well-as-black-panther-3-but-no-urgency-on-blade-or-deadpool-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Marvel Studios was reported to be focused on making an X-Men movie with a younger cast &#8220;to keep the cost down,&#8221; as well as Black Panther 3<\/a>, but was apparently in no rush to get Blade or Deadpool 4 out the door.<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">In May it was reported that <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/ryan-reynolds-is-reportedly-in-the-early-stages-of-trying-to-bring-a-deadpool-and-x-men-movie-to-life\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reynolds was in the &#8220;early stages&#8221; of trying to bring a Deadpool and X-Men movie to life<\/a>. As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/ryan-reynolds-deadpool-x-men-movie-1236200391\/\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">THR,<\/a> Reynolds&#8217; idea for this ensemble film would feature Deadpool, but not as the main character. Instead, he would share the spotlight with three of four other X-Men characters. In fact, it was said Reynolds wants these other characters to take center stage so they can be &#8220;used in unexpected ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Reynolds has also talked about <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" data-cy=\"styled-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/ryan-reynolds-reveals-why-deadpool-shouldnt-join-the-avengers-or-x-men\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">why Deadpool should never actually join the Avengers or the X-Men<\/a>, saying being a part of either team would mean the character was &#8220;at the end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-cy=\"paragraph\" class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Wesley is Director, News at IGN.
