This year\u2019s US Open<\/a> will offer what is claimed to be \u201cthe largest purse in tennis history\u201d after a 20 per cent increase in total prize money.<\/p>\n

The winner of the men\u2019s and women\u2019s singles will take home $5m each, in what is the biggest single pay-out among the four grand slams.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an increase of 39 per cent from last year, when Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka were awarded $3.6m.<\/p>\n

Sinner felt \u201ca small twitching\u201d in his stomach during the second set and took a medical timeout after Auger-Aliassime levelled the match, with the World No 1 pointing to his abdomen and heading off the court for treatment.<\/p>\n

The 24-year-old jogged back onto the court following the timeout and steadied the ship as his usual serve and forehand speed returned, before navigating some difficult moments against Auger-Aliassime to win in four.<\/p>\n

Tennis legend Bjorn Borg<\/a>, who won 11 grand slam titles, has revealed in an upcoming biography that he has been living with prostrate cancer for the past two years.<\/p>\n

Born, 69, told the Associated Press in an interview that he was diagnosed with an “extremely aggressive” prostate cancer and is in remission after undergoing an operation in 2024.<\/p>\n

The five-time Wimbledon<\/a> winner writes in his memoir, \u2018Heartbeats\u2019, \u201cI have a new opponent in cancer \u2014 one I can’t control.<\/p>\n

Never mind that Sinner had yet to play his quarter-final with Grigor Dimitrov<\/a>. The result was taken as read. Death, taxes and Jannik Sinner winning, to paraphrase the saying. (Ironically, Dimitrov then came a set away from a huge upset before retiring injured<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But the point stands that Sinner, the world No 1, a four-time grand slam champion, and Carlos Alcaraz<\/a>, world No 2 and five-time grand slam champion, are a cut above the rest of the field. After Sunday\u2019s clash in New York<\/a>, they will have won the last eight majors between them and contested the three most recent finals among themselves. It is the first time in the Open era that the same two players will contest three of the four slam finals in a season.<\/p>\n
