Local author to talk about latest book<\/p>\n
Pittsburgh author Frederic Durbin will stop by Northland Public Library from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 15 to discuss his new book, \u201cThe Country Under Heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n
The book tells the story of a Union soldier\u2019s journey across the American West that blends elements of the classic Western with historical fantasy.<\/p>\n
Durbin also will share his writing process and how he builds his fantastical worlds.<\/p>\n
Durbin is the author of two published novels and many short stories for adults and children. He has conducted literary interpretive programs and creative writing workshops for students of all grade levels. His novel, \u201cA Green and Ancient Light,\u201d was named a Year\u2019s Best Fantasy by Publishers Weekly and a Reading List Honor Book by the American Library Association. Learn about Gilden Age through virtual tour<\/p>\n
The Frick will share a virtual version of their tour titled \u201cGilded, Not Golden\u201d from 7 to 8 p.m. July 31.<\/p>\n
The Gilded Age was an era of immense wealth and progress, rapid industrialization, unprecedented immigration and labor strife. Explore this pivotal time in our nation\u2019s history at Clayton, the only remaining fully preserved Gilded Age mansion in Pittsburgh, and consider how the legacy of the Gilded Age continues to affect us today.<\/p>\n

Mark your calendars for Northland Public Library\u2019s fall book sale, which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27 and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 28.<\/p>\n
There will be something for all ages.<\/p>\n
Items available will include books, paperbacks, CDs, puzzles, games, DVDs and Talking Books CDs.<\/p>\n
On the last day, everything must go. There will be a bag sale for $5, plus tax, or patrons can grab as much as they can haul for $10, plus tax.<\/p>\n

Join Erin McMaster, a memory care adviser from Arden Courts, and staff members from Highland Hills to discuss Medicaid and Medicare. Snacks and beverages will be provided. Registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Sept 4 session will be about Senior Living; McMaster will talk about the different types of senior living care and facilities.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Orange Juice on Cereal: When Your Personal and Professional Lives Don\u2019t Pair Well: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18<\/p>\n
Join psychologist and life-career coach Dr. Susan Jarquin from Centered Lily LLC for a discussion on how women can accomplish ambitious goals in both their personal and professional lives. She will share advice for women who are displeased with the existing division of labor in their households. Registration is required.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Movie Matinee: \u201cBrussels\/West Virginia\u201d (2012): 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20<\/p>\n
In Brussels, we will enjoy the beer, chocolate and waffles. We\u2019ll take a bike tour through the city and view its wonderful architecture. In West Virginia, we\u2019ll enjoy all sorts of wild adventures such as rafting, mountain biking as well as visit such historic towns such as Harper\u2019s Ferry and Fayetteville. No registration is required. Mark your calendars: The Sept. 17 matinee will be \u201cYou Will Be My Son,\u201d a 2011 film from France about a man who has no faith in his son to inherit his prestigious family wine estate.<\/p>\n

\u2022 After-hours Among Us: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8<\/p>\n
There is an impostor among us, and they\u2019re bringing down the ship! Can you sus out who is sabotaging you and finish your tasks in time? Teens 12 to 18 can join us for this after-hours program where we play a live-action version of the popular mystery game.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Introduction to Debate: 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 13 and 18<\/p>\n
Join North Allegheny debate team members, Kavin and Alex, for an introduction to debate. Registration is required. Sign up for either session; information will be duplicated. Additional sessions will be offered in October for those wishing to learn more.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Cybersecurity for Kids by Kids: 1 to 2 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Aug. 15<\/p>\n
The North Allegheny Cybersecurity Club will discuss internet safety and cybersecurity for middle school students. The workshop will cover internet safety, internet ethics, forensics, operation systems, presentations from the 2024-25 CyberPatriot National Defense Competition NA Team and hands-on experiences. Registration is required. Both sessions are identical so register for just one of them.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Nature Friends Storytime: 10 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 19<\/p>\n
Children 3 to 5 are invited to explore nature-themed stories, songs and library fun. No registration required for this free program, but space is limited.<\/p>\n
