Kate McKinnon revealed she has an unusual health condition.<\/p>\n
\u201cI took a photo of my tongue and sent it to an actor friend of mine. We both have the same medical condition,\u201d the \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d alum, 41, told People<\/a> in an interview published Saturday. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s called geographic tongue,\u201d she said. \u201cYour tongue sheds in patches and looks like an atlas, hence the name \u2018geographic tongue.’\u201d<\/p>\n Kate McKinnon on \u201cThe Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\u201d in Sept. 2024. Todd Owyoung\/NBC via Getty Images<\/p>\n According to the Mayo Clinic<\/a>, geographic tongue is an inflammatory but harmless condition where the tongue is missing tiny, pinkish-white bumps called papillae, which are fine, hairlike structures. Instead, the tongue has smooth red patches that\u00a0often have slightly raised borders.<\/p>\n Some geographic tongue cases can involve pain or burning feeling, most often related to eating spicy or acidic foods. GC Images<\/p>\n McKinnon is not the first celebrity to reveal they have geographic tongue. <\/p>\n \u201cDuck Dynasty\u201d star Sadie Robertson shared a photo<\/a> of her tongue while revealing she has the same diagnosis in 2020.<\/p>\n \u201calso I have geographic tongue \u2013 yes it\u2019s a thing and yes that\u2019s why my tongue looks weird.\u201d the 28-year-old wrote alongside the selfie.<\/p>\n McKinnon was a cast member on \u201cSNL\u201d from 2012 to 2022 which earned her ten Emmy nominations.<\/p>\n
