\n\tMariah Carey graced the MTV VMAs stage<\/a> on Sunday to accept the Video Vanguard Award from Ariana Grande, delivering a speech and giving a career-spanning performance of songs including \u201cHoney,\u201d \u201cWe Belong Together\u201d and \u201cFantasy (Remix).\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGrande introduced Carey\u2019s performance, describing her many talents and the impact she\u2019s left on music. \u201cAs a vocalist, there\u2019s only one queen and that\u2019s Mariah,\u201d said Grande. \u201cShe knows no limits with her iconic five-octave range and has left an irrevocable impact on music history with her tone, technique and sound. Her music videos have become the pop playbook, giving us everything from alter egos to male drag to hundreds of iconic looks. Mariah Carey<\/a> is a singular talent and artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey then took the stage to perform songs from her extensive catalog, revisiting the treatments and looks from her music videos. She began in the bedroom with her slinky new single \u201cSugar Sweet,\u201d clad in pajamas and flanked by two backup dancers. She kicked up the mood with her iconic \u201cFantasy\u201d remix before segueing into a mashup of \u201cHoney\u201d and \u201cHeartbreaker\u201d \u2014 that is, before her alter ego Bianca showed up and Carey cut her down to size. Then came \u201cObsessed,\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s Like That\u201d and \u201cWe Belong Together,\u201d which capped off the performance.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tGrande then presented her with the award, leading into Carey\u2019s speech. \u201cThis moment is very heavy,\u201d she said. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m getting my first VMA tonight. I just have one question: What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for? I\u2019m kidding, I love you MTV, this is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMusic videos are my way of life, of bringing music to my own life,\u201d she continued. \u201cMany movies, visiualizing the sheer fantasy of it all. And let\u2019s be honest. Sometimes there\u2019s just an excuse to bring the drama and do things I wouldn\u2019t do in real life, like going in drag for \u2018Obsessed,\u2019 playing my alter ego Bianca in \u2018Heartbreaker,\u2019 escaping the mob in \u2018Honey\u2019 with a hot guy to a remote island \u2014 well that one really wasn\u2019t much of a stretch, but it happened. Anyway, after all this time, I learned music evolves, music evolves, but fun? That is eternal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier in the evening, Carey took home the VMA award for \u201cType Dangerous,\u201d which won for best R&B. The timing of the Video Vanguard Award couldn\u2019t be better for Carey, who is currently gearing up for the release of her new album \u201cHere For It All\u201d on September 26. So far, she released a pair of singles \u2014\u00a0\u201cType Dangerous\u201d and \u201cSugar Sweet\u201d featuring Kehlani and Shenseea \u2014 and revealed the tracklist for the album, touting additional features from Anderson .Paak and the Clark Sisters. Songs slated for the set include \u201cConfetti Champagne,\u201d \u201cIn Your Feelings\u201d and \u201cMi,\u201d which opens the record.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cType Dangerous\u201d initially dropped in early June and was co-written and co-produced by .Paak, who is rumored to serve as executive producer on the project. It\u2019s been seven years since Carey dropped 2018\u2019s \u201cCaution,\u201d which featured an assortment of collaborators including Mustard, Skrillex, No I.D. and Timbaland.<\/p>\n

\n\tCarey has since signed with Gamma, the independent label launched in 2023 by music executive Larry Jackson. Forbes reported that L.A. Reid will executive produce \u201cHere For It All\u201d under his new company Mega.<\/p>\n
