{"id":128965,"date":"2025-09-08T14:27:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T14:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/128965\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T14:27:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T14:27:06","slug":"mtv-vmas-2025-winners-lady-gaga-ariana-grande-and-sabrina-carpenter-triumph-at-muted-award-ceremony-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/128965\/","title":{"rendered":"MTV VMAs 2025 winners: Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter triumph at muted award ceremony | Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/sabrina-carpenter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sabrina Carpenter<\/a> triumphed at the MTV Video Music awards, taking home two moonman trophies each in a relatively muted show that once again largely celebrated female pop artists and legacy acts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Gaga, the most nominated artist of the evening with 12 nods, took home the first award at Long Island\u2019s UBS arena, for artist of the year, winning over fellow superstars Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny and Beyonc\u00e9, all of whom were not in attendance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Disease singer dedicated the award to the audience and her partner, Michael Polansky, then dashed off to the final show on her Mayhem tour at Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI cannot begin tell you what this means to me,\u201d the singer said, dressed in a baroque black gown. \u201cI hope as you navigate through the mayhem of daily life, you are reminded of the importance of the art of your life, that you can count on yourself and your simple skills to keep you whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lady Gaga at the MTV Video Music Awards 2025. The ceremony was emceed by a largely off-screen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/llcoolj\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LL Cool J<\/a> and handed out only seven awards during the telecast, all of them to female artists and Bruno Mars for his collaborations with two female artists: his duet with Lady Gaga, Die With A Smile, won best collaboration, while Apt, his track with Blackpink member Ros\u00e9, was crowned song of the year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is a really big moment for 16-year-old me and anyone else who has dreamed about being accepted equally for their hard work,\u201d Ros\u00e9 said in a lengthy and emotional speech.<\/p>\n<p>Ros\u00e9 receives the VMA for song of the year for Apt, her collaboration with Bruno Mars. Photograph: C Flanigan\/imageSPACE\/Shutterstock<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Sabrina Carpenter won album of the year for Short n\u2019 Sweet and best pop artist, while Grande won best pop video and the evening\u2019s top award, video of year, for Brighter Days Ahead, which she accepted alongside director Christian Breslauer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis project is about the hard work that is healing all different kinds of trauma and coming home to our young selves and creating safety in our own lives, which is a lifelong process and a daily exercise,\u201d Grande said, accepting the award. \u201cIf you\u2019re on that journey, please continue onward, because I promise there are brighter days ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">As is now typical, the VMAs nodded toward the globalization and genre blends in popular music \u2013 Colombian superstar J Balvin and French producer DJ Snake teamed up for their track Noventa; multinational girl group Katseye, with members from the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland and the US, won for Push performance of the year; and Post Malone and Jelly Roll, beaming in from their tour stop in Munich, represented the ongoing country-ification of pop with their booze-soaked anthem Losers.<\/p>\n<p>Sabrina Carpenter performs during the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. Photograph: John Shearer\/Getty Images for MTV<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the show skewed heavily toward the women in pop, with performances from Doja Cat, Canadian singer Tate McRae and Carpenter, who delivered a retro-themed performance of Tears accompanied by a who\u2019s who of RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race stars and ballroom icons as a statement on protecting trans rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In recent years, the show once known for delivering culture-defining moments has been more attuned to legacy than its potential to produce new ones, introducing two new lifetime achievement awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Inaugural Latin Icon honoree <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/ricky-martin\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ricky Martin<\/a> performed a medley of hits including Livin\u2019 La Vida Loca, P\u00e9gate, Maria and The Cup of Life, and attributed his 40-year career to his fans. \u201cThis is very simple: this is for you all,\u201d he said. \u201cI am addicted to your applause, that\u2019s why I keep coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">LL Cool J celebrated fellow hip-hop pioneer Busta Rhymes for the Rock the Bells Visionary Award, calling him a \u201csonic equivalent of a timebomb\u201d. Busta Rhymes powered through a heavily bleeped medley of his rapid-fire bars alongside guests GloRilla, Spliff Star and Joyner Lucas, before accepting the award \u2013 named for a 1985 LL Cool J track \u2013 with a brief speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe next time y\u2019all take 35 years to give me one of these, then I\u2019ll talk as long as I want,\u201d he joked, thanking his family, God, DJ Scratch, and the late Ananda Lewis, a 1990s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/mtv\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MTV<\/a> host who \u201cloved the culture and lifted us up\u201d and died of cancer this year at the age of 52.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Mariah Carey was presented with the Video Vanguard Award by Ariana Grande, becoming the eighth consecutive woman to win the evening\u2019s top lifetime achievement honor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m getting my first VMA tonight. I just have one question: what in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?\u201d Carey joked, after performing a medley of her hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cMusic videos are my way of life, of bringing music to my own life,\u201d she continued. \u201cLet\u2019s be honest, sometimes they\u2019re just an excuse to bring the drama and do things I wouldn\u2019t do in real life \u2026 Music evolves, but fun? Photograph: Christopher Polk\/Billboard\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The show also celebrated Ozzy Osbourne, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/jul\/22\/ozzy-osbourne-obituary\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who died in July<\/a>.
