Courtesy Misty Combs<\/p>\n<p>Combs and her co-worker reportedly heard a ruckus happening near the dumpster in the parking lot and noticed a panicked raccoon attempting to rescue two of her pups trapped inside. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur health department is right beside Kentucky Mist Moonshine, a distillery, and they had put some fermented peaches in their dumpster, and I guess the baby raccoons had gotten in the dumpster and they were stuck,\u201d the longtime nurse explained.<\/p>\n<p>The RN\u2019s \u201cmotherly instinct\u201d kicked in, and she knew she had to get the babies out of the dumpster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw that momma and she was trying so hard to get her babies back and she didn\u2019t know what to do,\u201d Combs told the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>She grabbed a shovel and scooped out the first baby raccoon, who ran to its mom \u2014 but the second raccoon was face down in the bottom of the dumpster, which was filled with water and moonshine-soaked peaches.<\/p>\n<p>Combs grabbed the raccoon by the tail and pulled it to safety, realizing that it was unresponsive.<\/p>\n<p>Combs performed CPR on the unresponsive animal. Lex18<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody around was like, \u2018It\u2019s dead, it\u2019s not breathing.\u2019 It had drowned, and it was full of water; you could feel the water, so immediately, I just started doing CPR on it,\u201d Combs shared.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qdrba8yorJc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">now-viral video<\/a> taken by coworkers, Combs was seen performing compressions on the raccoon\u2019s chest, then flipping it on its side to slap its back.<\/p>\n<p>Combs had never performed CPR on an animal before in her 21 years of nursing, but she told Lex18 that she did what she could in the moment to help save its life.<\/p>\n<p>Combs performed compressions on the raccoon\u2019s chest. Lex18<\/p>\n<p>The raccoon eventually began breathing \u2014 but Combs was a little reluctant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire time, I was afraid it\u2019d come-to and eat me up, and raccoons carry rabies so I was afraid of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the raccoon could react poorly, <a href=\"https:\/\/fw.ky.gov\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Fish and Wildlife<\/a> responded and took the animal to the local veterinarian who administered fluids and got the raccoon sober. <\/p>\n<p>The raccoon eventually began breathing.
