{"id":132034,"date":"2025-09-09T20:20:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T20:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/132034\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T20:20:06","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T20:20:06","slug":"canada-israel-davis-cup-matches-in-halifax-closed-to-fans-due-to-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/132034\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada-Israel Davis Cup matches in Halifax closed to fans due to safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The Davis\u00a0Cup matchup\u00a0between Canada and Israel will be held in a closed venue without spectators this week in Halifax due to safety concerns, Tennis Canada announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said in a news release the decision was made in consultation with the International Tennis Federation due to &#8220;escalating safety concerns&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;intelligence received from local authorities and national security agencies.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were forced to conclude that playing behind closed doors was the only way to both safeguard those involved and preserve the event itself,&#8221; the release read.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to close the Davis Cup World Group I tie\u00a0to fans comes after more than 400 Canadian athletes and academics, including Olympic runner Moh Ahmed,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/sports\/tennis\/moh-ahmed-letter-davis-cup-tie-canada-israel-1.7611710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">urged Tennis Canada in a letter<\/a>\u00a0to cancel the event\u00a0over Israel&#8217;s actions in Gaza and the West Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The letter cited scholars and human rights groups who have described those actions as genocide against the Palestinian people.\u00a0The Gaza Health Ministry says nearly 63,000 Palestinian combatants and civilians <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/israel-gaza-city-offensive-trump-1.7627603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been killed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In its response, Tennis Canada said\u00a0it &#8220;acknowledges the ongoing and deeply complex situation in the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>No one from the organization was immediately available for an interview Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Safety &#8216;paramount,&#8217; says tennis federation<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A spokesperson for the International Tennis Federation,\u00a0the sport&#8217;s global governing body, said it shared Tennis Canada&#8217;s disappointment over closing the venue but emphasized safety as the priority.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;The safety of all players, supporters and tournament staff is always paramount, and Tennis Canada considered a range of detailed security advice before coming to this decision,&#8221; the federation\u00a0said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A flyer promoting a March for Palestine event scheduled during the Davis Cup matches in Halifax.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/davis-cup-protest-poster.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.7771084337349397\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>A flyer in Halifax promoting a march planned for Friday and Saturday. (Giuliana Grillo de Lambarri\/CBC)<\/p>\n<p>The tie, which is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was initially to be played at Scotiabank Centre.\u00a0The matches will be livestreamed.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets were still available through Ticketmaster on Tuesday morning but sales were shut down by noon local time. .
